System serves any make of M-C with pallets

A Fastems Divisions, Helvar product story

One of the main benefits of the Fastems FPM compact pallet storage and retrieval systems design is that the pallet crane travels vertically to access multiple storage levels to deliver pallets to a variety of machining centres.

During a recent Open House, a FPM system was married with a Toyoda FH55S horizontal machining centre (HMC) to form a compact 'FMS' cell.

The compact cell was configured with a single pallet load/unload station and storage on two levels for eight 500mm square pallets.

A 3-axis CNC rail-guided stacker crane uses telescopic forks to handle pallets.

Up to 68 pallet transfers/h can be achieved feeding one machine tool.

The system can be expanded at low cost simply by extending the racking, communications bus and guide rails.

There are no hard-wired connections as the link between the crane and other FPM elements is by infrared.

The whole system is fully guarded and interlocked.

Fastems has upgraded its software, having introduced MMS (manufacturing management system).

It runs on a PC under Windows NT4 to give integrated control over cell functions, link with the machine tools' CNCs, as well as linking loading stations and stacker crane movements over an InterBus-S.

A client/server arrangement will connect different cells on the same site over LAN.

A further option is remote monitoring and control through a modem.

The MMS-1000 module will also perform job scheduling, advanced diagnostics and stacker crane utilisation data.

The modular structure of MMS allows the user to tack on MRP, machines program downloading and integration of assembly functions.

The MMS can also be configured to 'mirror' a machining centre's tool magazine to perform dynamic tool monitoring.

Further enhancement of MMS includes order management, production capacity simulation and machine tool utilisation data.
