High performance modular laptop programs robots

A French Technology Press Bureau product story
Edited by the Manufacturingtalk editorial team May 24, 2004

High performance laptop's modularity enables it to meet user-needs in industries such as telecoms, automotive and avionics, including the maintenance and programming of factory robots.

Logic Instrument of France - a European leader in the manufacturing of ruggedized high-performance laptops for use across the high-tech, defence and engineering sectors - has launched its TETRASmart portable PC.

The TETRASmart's modularity enables it to meet user-needs and provide applications in industries such as telecoms, automotive and avionics, as well as in the military, which already use the TETRA range of computers.

Applications include the maintenance and programming of factory robots, wireless data transmission, and the analysis of military signals in the field, among others.

Logic Instrument's dedicated laptop meets the growing need for new features and higher performance in the industrial data processing sector.

The modularity of the TETRASmart allows it to fulfil the requirements of numerous applications in the telecommunications, broadcasting, car manufacturing, avionics and defence sectors, which are already users of the TETRA range.

Examples of current applications include the maintenance and programming of robots in factories; wireless data transmission; the analysis of military signals; high-speed video image testing, processing and recording; and finally protocol analysis, simulation and real-time embedded testing.

The environment sector and the chemicals industry have also shown an interest in the TETRASmart, with a view to applications related to data acquisition as well as vibratory and acoustic analysis.

The TETRASmart includes a range of attractive and advanced features: * Three to five easily accessible full length ISA/PCI slots for additional cards.

* A three-axis add-in card retention system (whatever the size of the card).

* An exclusive air-flow system preventing any risk of overheating.

* A model of attach?-case that is ideal for mobile applications in harsh environments.

* Superior power, performance and multimedia features, thanks to a rigorous choice of components: Intel Pentium IV processor, AC97 audio with two built-in speakers, 16MB DDR video memory, Open GL performances, Ultra ATA 100 HDD, and 10 Base T/100 Base TX Ethernet with dual Ethernet.

* A 15in TFT SXGA display for matchless resolution and legibility.

* A fixed or independent keyboard suitable for any situation.

Besides these features, the TETRASmart features a removable hard-disk drive, an AC/DC power supply or a PCMCIA drive, and a choice of three PCI or mixed ISA/PCI passive backplanes, which provide the user with a configuration matching his (or her) requirements.

About the TETRA range of computers - the entire TETRA range is particularly aimed at the manufacturing and defence sectors, where high-quality equipment alone can meet the needs and expectations of engineers or technicians looking for extreme performance and reliability in demanding, harsh environments.

The full TETRA series of rugged portable computers includes the TETRALight-XS and TETRALight-S PC tablets, the TETRANote rugged notebook PC and the TETRA2 multi-application portable PC.

For users needing the ultimate in card expansion capabilities, there is also the TETRAWide, which features nine extra-large ISA/PCI card slots.

The TETRANote (IP54) is the rugged notebook that is ideal for harsh environments.

Light but robust, its great modularity enables the use of various options that increase its range of applications.

Its slot expansion unit for two ISA/PCI cards makes it a genuine tool for testing, measurement, data acquisition or instrumentation.

The TETRALight-S and TETRALight-XS constitute the ideal equipment for outdoor applications needing power, autonomy of use and lightness.

Both PC tablets support the latest generation of microprocessors and hard disks.

They come with a touch-screen display (heightened brightness optional), as well as an optional port replicator, three hours' autonomy of use and a wireless keyboard.

The TETRALight-S and TETRALight-XS PC tablets comply with the NEMA and MIL-STD-810 standards applying to equipment used by the military.

The TETRA2 is the only multi-application portable computer that can house up to seven ISA/PCI full-length cards in such a small volume.

Supplied with a Pentium IV processor, like the TETRASmart, the TETRA2 provides all the power of a desktop PC for the user's mobile applications.

About Logic Instrument - Logic Instrument is now ISO9001-2000-certified and is listed on the Paris Stock Exchange Marche Libre (SICOVAM No4494).

The company also has a strong worldwide presence, with subsidiaries in the USA and in Germany, and a growing network of distributors outside France.

Since its foundation in 1987, Logic Instrument has been able to develop its two activities jointly, to multiply its sales by 25 and to increase its staff number from three to 30.

The company is now made up of the Test and Measurement and TETRA business units.

Logic Instrument was created by Michel Bailly and Jacques Gebran, both specialists in electronic instruments and international trading.

At the time, the company's main activity was the distribution of testing systems and electronic and telecommunications instrumentation tools.

As early as 1988, the first portable computer dedicated to the manufacturing sector (the Logi 286) made by the French company competed with rival one-application dedicated machines that were bulky as well as costly, and were not upgradeable.
