Made of flexible, high-resistance SS, a high-tech linear encoder with a winding reel can measure distances of up to 15m with a resolution of 0.1mm.

Vectral of France has just launched Rollzam - the first high-tech linear encoder with a winding reel, which can measure distances of up to 15 metres.

The company is a leading specialist in incremental linear encoders for lengths of up to 400 metres.

Vectral is marketing Rollzam throughout the world and is looking for local distributors.

Rollzam is a perforated tape, made of high-resistance stainless steel.

It is remarkably flexible, meaning that tight adjustments are not necessary during set-up.

It is wound into a case with an automatic return spring.

The detector head and connections are fixed and protected.

The high-speed, optoelectronic detector head counts the number of perforations at a speed of up to 10m/s, with a resolution of 0.1mm.

Measurements made using the Rollzam linear encoder are, therefore, accurate to the nearest tenth of a millimetre.

A further advantage is that the winding reel displays the distance digitally using a Meterdrive sensor, which does not contain any mechanical parts, so positioning can be repeated accurately.

Vectral's linear encoders can be used to index overhead cranes, move telescopes and position lifts, as well as to control the altitude of uranium rods in nuclear power plants.

Linear encoders can also be used to modernise industrial machines - planing machines, folding machines or other shearing devices - which have no digital display, at only a fraction of the cost of replacement.

The encoders are particularly well-adapted to the linear-guidance systems used by most manufacturers.
