Measuring arm improves cars' fit and function
Sports car manufacturer is using a measuring arm for reverse engineering and acquiring new data to make the fit and function of the cars better in a more consistent time.
The Morgan Motor Company based within the small town of Malvern in Worcestershire, UK, is a specialist company that builds five hundred 'made to order' sports cars every year.
The company was founded by HFS Morgan who began manufacturing in 1909.
The cars are authentically built by a workforce of just under a 100, who lovingly produce these ash-framed vehicles.
Owing to increased demands from Europe and the USA, Morgan has recently introduced the FaroArm to improve accuracy of build and thus ease production.
In May 2005, Morgan was made aware of the FaroArm from another firm who spoke highly of the product.
The company was provided with a demonstration by one of the specialist FARO Arm Specialist.
Morgan instantly recognised the benefits and purchased the FaroArm in July.
Morgan is using the FaroArm in two ways, reverse engineering and acquiring data that was previously unknown.
Derek Jones a design engineer at Morgan explained: "The arm was needed to make the fit and function better of the cars in a more consistent time." Morgan had previously found that they had missing information when measuring particular aspects of the cars, thus they were not getting the precise measurements that they required.
Jones continued, "The FaroArm has given us the ability to overcome previous issues with accurate measurements and allowed us to capture data as a design and production aid.
By obtaining accurate data you can reduce production times." This is an important issue for the company considering that they are now producing more vehicles, and wish to improve efficiency.
Design engineer Graham Chapman commented: "The arm is extremely flexible; it can be moved in to different areas within the company and isn't in one fixed position so you can also take it to the vehicle rather than vice-versa." This ease of usage is imperative.
Morgan has already started making plans to mark the company's centenary in 2009, which is going to be a year long celebration.
FARO hopes that the continued success of reducing production times by providing Morgan with accurate measurements for their motor cars will mean that the FaroArm will be frequently integrated within the production of the vehicles.
This will ensure that Morgan to continues to produce a high quality product in the future.
