Metrology software made for portable CMM arms
Metrology software for portable coordinate measuring arms can easily change/convert between different measurement units or coordinate systems.
Super Aguri purchased an 8ft Platinum FaroArm in January 2006 and at present its primary use is to measure bodywork parts and fits and it is also used to carry out car legality checks prior to a Formula 1 race.
Additionally, the arm is also utilized to reverse engineer profiles for the driver's seat area to enable any necessary changes to be carried out on the car.
The accuracy of the Platinum FaroArm enables the above checks to be carried out on the completed car which would usually be very difficult and time consuming when using Traditional CMM equipment.
The FaroArm itself is internally counterbalanced for 'neutral buoyancy' and fatigue-free usage.
In fact, overload sensors prevent users from stressing the arm and help ensure precise measurement, making it 'the only arm with feeling'.
The FaroArm can be used anywhere to inspect, to reverse engineer or to perform alignments and CAD to part inspection with previously unheard of accuracy.
The FaroArm hardware is capable of interfacing not only with FARO CAM 2 Measure software , but also with a wide range of 3rd Party software suppliers which adds to the flexibility that the arm can offer.
At present Super Aguri are running Mitutoyo MCOSMOS-3 inspection software on the FaroArm.
Inspection manager Tim Nolan quoted: "Interfacing our existing Mitutoyo software with the arm has enabled staff to inspect and reverse engineer components without the need for additional software training, thus saving costs." Nolan also added: "Since the introduction of the arm, inspection and verification time of patterns and bodywork has been greatly reduced compared to carrying out the same exercise on a fixed bed CMM.
