Laser technology reverse-engineering
equipment
An organisation has successfully used Faro's Platinum ScanArm reverse-engineering equipment to scan the inside of an aircraft engine compartment.
Traditionally, in order to retrofit custom aircraft engines, technicians would mark points with tape measures and T squares, which made it nearly impossible to acquire the 3-D data or resolution needed to fit the engine parts Realising the shortcomings of traditional methods, one organisation used only Faro's Platinum ScanArm reverse-engineering equipment

Portable CMM software gets 250 enhancements
There are 250 enhancements in the latest version of portable arm CMM software, including a new user interface that shares a common 'look and feel' with existing software.
Powerful HighRES CAD/CAM added to laser tracker
By providing a reverse engineering software module with its laser tracking system, a CMM supplier says its users no longer need to import 3D data from stand-alone platforms.
The ScanArm uses laser technology to collect, store and analyse 3-D data in digital form.
They scanned the inside of the aircraft engine compartment and recorded the dimensions using Geomagic, one of dozens of software packages compatible with Faro's portable CMMs.
The software operators could easily manipulate the scanned data in order to engineer the alterations that were required to position the unique dimensions of the new engines into the aircraft.
"(The engine) fits if you scan it properly," said one of the program's directors.
The ScanArm collects thousands of points per second, allowing their R and D team to reverse engineer aircraft bodies and other parts, as well as engine compartments.
The Faro system's accurate 3-D data collecting and GDandT reporting capabilities also allow the organisation to provide contract services to Aerospace companies who need to have parts reverse engineered or inspected.
The Faro ScanArm provided them with a method to digitally create 3-D CAD models of aircraft components.
Quick and accurate measurement collection via the ScanArm resulted in dramatic time savings over trial-and-error methods for retrofitting custom components.
The director summed up his experiences by stating, "Faro has revolutionized the business". Request a free brochure from Faro UK ...
