Precision engineer invests in portable
CMM
Precision aerospace component manufacturer has invested in a portable CMM to measure components in-situ and avoid the need to re-set machinery.
Faro Technologies' Faro gage-PLUS portable CMM has helped boost productivity in Burcas' manufacture of precision components, particularly for the aerospace sector "Our move into aerospace really focused our minds on the benefits we could obtain by using the latest measuring technology," works manager Steve Bounds explained

Portable CMM software gets 250 enhancements
There are 250 enhancements in the latest version of portable arm CMM software, including a new user interface that shares a common 'look and feel' with existing software.
Powerful HighRES CAD/CAM added to laser tracker
By providing a reverse engineering software module with its laser tracking system, a CMM supplier says its users no longer need to import 3D data from stand-alone platforms.
"The work requires us to machine to very high accuracy, so the last thing we want to do is remove a component from the machine mid-operation in order to measure it".
He said; "The ability to measure the component in-situ and avoid the need to re-set the machine - with all the associated problems of accuracy, lost time and the creeping doubt that somewhere during the process something was not replaced exactly as it should have been - is fantastic".
Burcas has found the Faro gage-PLUS to be very user-friendly.
Furthermore the amount and accuracy of the data obtained using the Faro gage Plus is far superior.
It can be used to measure complex geometric forms, such as angles and complex curves that would not have been possible with non-digital methods.
The information is fed directly from the probe into the laptop, so the results are easily and accurately stored, printed or forwarded by e-mail as required.
An additional bonus is the reduction in re-calibration activity, with the multipurpose Faro gage-PLUS replacing an array of previously used equipment, each item of which needed to be re-calibrated separately, using valuable production time as well as the administrative resource required to schedule, track and manage the re-calibration effort.
