In announcing the finalists for the Fork Lift Truck Association Awards for Excellence 2006, the FLTA has paid tribute to the quality of every entrant reaching this stage of the competition.

In announcing the finalists for the Fork Lift Truck Association Awards for Excellence 2006, the FLTA has paid tribute to the quality of every entrant reaching this stage of the competition.

"Each finalist in the crucial categories of Safety, Ergonomics and Innovation - for which the winners will be decided by an open vote - has brought a genuine and significant advance to the industry," says FLTA chief executive David Ellison.

"They have won through against some keen competition, so in every sense the products and services that have reached this stage can be regarded as the 'pick of the year'".

Anyone who has not yet cast their vote can go to the FLTA website to find out how to do it.

It only takes a few minutes (the deadline for voting is 31 January 2006).

The same site gives details of how to book a place at the Awards ceremony - although you will have to hurry, as the event is always a sell-out.

One of the highlights of the materials handling calendar, Awards 2006 will be staged at the Birmingham Hilton Metropole on Saturday 11 February 2006.

And as the organisers always emphasise, this event is not just important for its contribution to raising standards in the industry and its recognition of product excellence; it is also a truly fantastic night out.

The Safety finalists are as follows.

Ashtree Glass, MX 943 Wide Angle Safety Mirror.

Made from durable, safe materials, and precisely adjustable, the MX 943 gives a large field of vision without obscuring forward view.

A mounting arm is available for installation without drilling holes.

Doosan Infracore UK, Active Safety Control on Pro-5 Series Electric Counterbalance.

Steering angle sensors, featuring optical pulse technology, monitor both the speed and angle of turning.

Performance information is used to control travel during cornering - ensuring safer speeds and reducing the risk of overturning.

Linde Material Handling (UK), X Range of Reach Trucks.

Advantages of this revolutionary design include higher stability, 50 per cent reduction in forward mast deflection (more secure load handling), minimal mast sway (less truck movement when stacking at height) and better visibility through the mast.

Mitsubishi Forklift Trucks, Integrated Presence System (IPS).

IPS detects whether the driver is correctly seated and, if not, prevents all hydraulic movement and truck travel.

IPS also provides a parking brake alarm and seat belt warning light.

RTITB, 3rd Level Lift Truck Training and Assessment Software.

With highly realistic 3D animated graphics, the program is designed to train and assess lift truck operators safely and conveniently via a standard PC.

Assessment of hazard perception helps focus courses on candidates' weakest areas.

Safeguard Systems Europe, Safe-truck High-visibility Inspection Paddles.

The paddle indicates a truck's safety inspection status.

Before inspection, or if faults are detected, the truck is marked as unsafe to use.

Certificates can be placed in the paddle to mark the truck as safe.

Still Materials Handling, Side Battery Change on RX 20 Electric Counterbalance.

A simple side battery change - said to be unique for a series of forklifts with capacities as low as 1.5 tonnes - dispenses with the need for a hoist.

This makes changeovers both faster and safer.

Toyota Industrial Equipment, SpeedSafe Automatic Speed System.

This factory-fitted system uses an infrared transmitter at the warehouse entry, and a sensor on the truck, to apply different pre-selected travel speed limits to indoor and outdoor work.
