consumption
Firwood Paints has helped a customer reduce their solvent consumption to below 5 tonnes by converting one of their coating processes from a solvent borne product to a water borne version.
The Solvent Emissions Directive (SED) is a piece of EC legislation that sets out to address the issue of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC's) and the environment The purpose of this directive is to prevent or reduce the direct and indirect effects of emissions of VOC's into the environment, mainly into air, and the potential risks to human health

If you use or manufacture paints and varnishes that contain organic solvents (VOC's) you must ensure that they comply with the relevant limit value.
These restrict the amount of solvent that the ready-to-use product can contain.
Some businesses that use organic solvents (VOC's) need a Pollution Prevention and Control (PPC) permit from their environmental regulator before they can operate.
However, this does not apply if a company has a solvent consumption of less than 5 tonnes per annum.
One of Firwood's customers has successfully reduced their solvent consumption to below the 5 tonne threshold by converting one of their coating processes from a solvent borne product to a water borne version.
The company manufactures agricultural components and equipment and one of their processes involves dipping components into a tank filled with a modified version of Firaqua 2570 - Water borne gloss.
Firaqua 2570 is a quick drying, low odour, water borne gloss that is suitable for both dipping and spraying.
Its rapid drying properties also allow coated items to be handled quickly.
The company are delighted with the switch as it allows them to achieve the same level of results from the coating but means they no longer require a PPC permit.
In doing so the company are also playing their part in protecting the environment.
