Universal cylindrical grinder is modular

A Fritz Studer product story
Edited by the Manufacturingtalk editorial team Feb 25, 2008

A universal cylindrical grinding machine has a swivelling turret wheelhead that enables the external, internal and form grinding of workpieces in a single clamping.

The Fritz Studer S31 compact CNC universal cylindrical grinding machine can grind medium-sized parts externally or internally in one clamping.

The machine is designed for the grinding of workpieces in individual as well as small and large series production operations.

Applications range from job shops to automotive.

The S31 is very modular and expandable and can be adapted to uses in the grinding of electro motor shafts, pump gears, all forms of plastics injection components, location pins and all kinds of tool holding fixtures.

The Granitan machine bed forms the basis for assembling the high-technology components to build a cylindrical grinding machine that guarantees the highest levels of precision, performance and reliability over many years, said Studer.

* Swivelling turret wheelhead - the swivelling turret wheelhead enables the external, internally and form grinding in a single clamping.

Depending on the customer's requirement, the wheelhead is available with a manual (2.5 deg) or automatic (1 deg) swivel (Hirth coupling).

The position and speed-controlled C-axis enables complete machining which also entails form and thread grinding.

The standard C-axis with measuring system on the drive motor is suitable for thread grinding.

A direct measuring system is mounted on the workhead spindle for maximum form accuracy (high-precision C-axis).

Acceleration and grinding forces are absorbed without difficulty through the high dynamic rigidity of the axis drives.

The S31 enables axis-parallel grinding of conventional to high accuracy threads.

Polygons, eccentrics, control cams, cams etc.

can be manufactured cost-effectively and in the highest precision with High Speed Machining (HSM).

The practical Studer grinding software with its proven pictogramming allows even less experienced users to quickly optimize the potential of this machine.

The operator strings the individual grinding cycles together - the control unit generates the ISO code.

For the Studer S31 different handling systems are available which can be precisely adapted to the machine application and the machining process.

Loading systems like the Studer easyLoad ensure seamless integration into the machine and the machine control.

The standardized loader interface is already prepared.

The full enclosure with two large sliding doors makes setting up easy and convenient, said Studer to manufacturingtalk.

and emulsion or oils can be used as a cooling lubricant.

S31 dimensions are as follows.

* Distance between centres - 650/1000 mm.

* Centre height - 175mm.

* Workpiece weight - 80/120kg.

* Grinding wheel - 500 x 63 (80) mm.

* Driving power - 7.5kW.

* Machine weight - 5500/6000kg.

Hardware features are as follows.

* Turret wheel head can be fitted with: manual swivelling 2.5 deg Hirth; 1 deg automatic swivelling Hirth coupling and a high resolution B axis 0.0001 deg.

* Frequency controlled motor spindles for external and internal grinding.

* C-axis for the work head can perform thread, form and profile grinding.

* Full enclosure with two sliding doors.

* The machine base is made of Granitan mineral concrete casting.

A short selection of a wide range of options is as follows.

* High-precision C-axis.

* Rotary dressing.

* High speed machining (HSM) for out-of-round grinding.

* Quick-Set: the software for grinding wheel alignment reduces resetting times by up to 90%.

* Integration of a loading system for the automated workpiece handling, e g, Studer easyLoad.
