The packaging for the fresh juices of Dutch retailer Albert Heijn has won the prestigious Dutch Design Award.

FLEX/the INNOVATIONLAB and FutureBrand were responsible for the purity and simplicity of the design of the bottles The jury expressed that packaging design is complex because of the wide variety of consumer and technical needs that must be fulfilled

The Albert Heijn juice bottles have a removable label.

On the breakfast table a beautiful carafe remains.

It was this clear conceptual idea which made the jury award the prize to FLEX and FutureBrand.

In our everyday life packaging plays a dominant role.

Everything we eat and drink, every body care product we use needs packaging.

Packaging influences the way we use products, how long we can store it and what we throw away.

It is therefore important that packaging is well designed.

The jury of the Dutch Design Prizes judged the nominated packaging designs on production and logistic aspects, user functionality, use of materials, originality and their power to communicate the proposition of the product.

The bottles for Albert Heijn's fresh juices score well on each of these criteria.

Special attention during the project was given to the innovative labeling system: cardboard cones which snap onto the neck of the bottle.

The cones are not only used for communication purposes, they also make the bottle 'tamper evident' without having to apply an extra sticker.

Before use, the cone is torn of the bottle leaving only a small round 'stamp'.

The bare bottle is a beautiful carafe which enhances the moment of enjoying freshly squeezed orange juice.

A special machine was developed to apply the cones in high speed.

Stephan Rein, one of the designers at FLEX/the INNOVATIONLAB, said that it is rewarding to see that a qualified jury has selected our design from all the nominees.

But the most important thing for us is that people enjoy using it and that it offers our client Albert Heijn the benefits they are looking for.
