CNC auto toolholders ensure repeatable tool change
Quick-change insert holders for CNC automatic lathes - of either pre-set or fixed length, and often with more tools - uses a ridge location system to ensure rigid and repeatable tool change.
Floyd Automatic Tooling further reinforced its commitment to total technical and commercial tooling support for users of sliding head lathes.
An extensive range of tooling for all areas of turned part production was shown at MACH 2006.
The main attraction on the Floyd stand was the presentation of the new Applitec Modu-Line quick-change pre-settable tooling program.
It was demonstrated on three high specification turning machines.
The close working relationship that Floyd Automatic has built with 'high-end' machine tool manufacturers saw a Citizen K16 from NC Engineering, a Star SB16 from Star Micronics and a Tornos DECO 26A from Tornos Technologies UK, all equipped with the system on static display to enable visitors to get a 'hands on' experience of the concept.
The concept of the Modu-Line program enables a range of Applitec quick-change insert holders of either pre-set or fixed length type and often with an increased number of tools to be used on the machine.
The holders use the unique Applitec ridge location system to ensure a rigid and repeatable tool change.
Special coolant feed blocks with directional nozzles to take high-pressure coolant can also be incorporated.
This provides the user with significantly reduced set-up times and enhanced flexibility via additional tool options.
All this serves to give the end user a massive productivity and capability advantage.
Besides demonstrating outstanding tooling capabilities on its stand, Floyd Automatic had its tooling in operation on a number of machine tool manufacturers stands.
On the Star Micronics stand, a machining demonstration highlighting the exciting Schwanog Thread Whirling system was shown.
Suited to medical applications and alternative industries that require rapid production of high quality threads, the Schwanog system is guaranteed to be well received.
Also on show was the Schwanog range of splining tools.
Displayed on the Macro CNC stand, the splining system eradicates the need for second operations by splining in a single operation on a lathe.
Serration can be achieved in only 7s.
The Schwanog 'Serration Shave Tool' consists of a 1/4 circle with six teeth.
Only the last tooth has a complete tooth profile with each of the preceding five profiles having gradually decreasing profile depth.
The shaving of the serration is achieved by the tool being fed to depth in three to four passes at rapid feed in 'Z'.
In the second step the spindle indexes by the required number of teeth with the tool fed to depth, giving roughing and finishing with one pass.
The cost of Schwanog tooling is quickly recovered with second operations often being eliminated.
