An established sub-contract manufacturer of precision turned parts is using inserts to help it produce a wide cross-section of complex turned parts in sliding headstock automatics.

Turnomatic, an established sub-contract manufacturer of precision turned parts is using Applitec inserts from Floyd Automatic Tooling to help it produce a wide cross-section of complex turned parts on its five Swiss sliding headstock automatics In a similar vein to many UK sub-contract turned part manufacturers Edmonton-based Turnomatic is edging away from volume production

Formed 50 years ago to supply batch quantities of up to 1 million to the electrical plug and socket industry using coil-fed rotary transfer machines, the past five years have seen the company gradually move towards far lower batch sizes of more complex components produced using CNC sliding head automatic lathe technology.

The CNC side of Turnomatic's business has grown from zero to 45% in recent years; a fact that works manager Ray Reeve said it would not be achievable without the introduction of CNC sliding head lathes.

A key element in the company's successful use of this technology is Applitec tooling from Floyd Automatic.

"The main advantage of the sliding heads is that components that were produced in several operations on the rotary transfer machines can now be completed in one-hit," said Reeve.

"This has cut our set-up times dramatically, as well as our work-in-progress - we can just turn and ship the parts.

However, while this sounds simple, we rely heavily on the quality generated by Floyd's Applitec inserts." The Applitec-fitted sliding head lathes work daily producing a wide variety of parts from brass, steel, phosphor bronze and aluminium for industries such as the electrical, electronic, display and modelmaking sectors.

Overnight the machines are often set with Applitec tooling and left to run 'lights out', something Reeve said he can do with confidence, safe in the knowledge the combination of machine and tooling will hold tolerances of 0.02mm consistently.

"There is no doubting that the Applitec inserts serve their purpose very well," said Reeve.

"Floyd was one of the first in the UK to supply tooling that is specifically dedicated to use on automatic lathes.

As an established supplier of ours they also offer very competitive prices and I am more than happy to continue using them." Floyd Automatic is the UK agent for the Swiss manufactured Applitec inserts.

The range consists of: TOP-Line 300 and 700 series turning tools; The NEW CUT-Line parting-off and grooving tools (just released); ISO-Line ISO turning tools; ECO-Line 200 turning tools (patent pending); and TOOLING-Line, which encompasses all other carbide tools for automatic lathes such as centres, chamfering tools, drills, reamers, end mills, slitting saws etc.
