Safety specialist brings machines up to date
When University of Wales College wanted to bring woodworking and metalworking machinery into compliance with current regulations a machinery safety specialist carried out the task.
* Undertake an audit of machine guarding.
If it does not exist or does not meet current specifications then new or supplementary guarding will be required.
* Ensure that machines are brought up to modern standards in terms of safety features.
* Arrange machine specific operator training on the new or additional features, i.e how to use the machine correctly/safely; how and when to undertake regular service/maintenance.
* Obtain certification of compliance.

Deadlines for compliance with PUWER 98: * 5th December 2003 - This first stage of compliance focussed on woodworking machinery and relates to retrofitting of braking on circular saw benches, dimension saws, powered and hand-fed cross-cut saws, single end and double-end tenoning machines incorporating a circular saw and/or tenoning attachment.
* 5th December 2005 - applies to narrow bandsaws, re-saws, vertical spindle mounding machines (unless fitted with manual or foot operated brake), hand-fed routing machines, thicknessing machines, and surface planning machines.
* 5th December 2008 - applies to any other machines not included under the earlier deadlines where the risk assessment shows braking to be necessary.
