For those who need some guidance on compliance with Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998, a machinery safety consultancy offers a check-list.

For those who need some guidance on compliance with PUWER 98 (Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998), Huddersfield based Fenay Machine Safety offers the following check-list: * Identify machines that have a greater stopping time than 10 seconds These will require retrofitting of appropriate braking systems to bring them into compliance

* Undertake an audit of machine guarding.

If it does not exist or does not meet current specifications then new or supplementary guarding will be required.

* Ensure that machines are brought up to modern standards in terms of safety features.

* Arrange machine specific operator training on the new or additional features, i.e how to use the machine correctly/safely; how and when to undertake regular service/maintenance.

* Obtain certification of compliance.

This is always advisable in order to provide evidence for Health and Safety.

"Because PUWER 98 relates to machinery and equipment it applies to everyone - even a one man operation," explains Fenay Machine Safety Director Richard Wrigley.

"Once you are aware of the risk then, as a business, you have a duty to do something about it." Fenay Machine Safety is widely recognised as the leading expert in PUWER 98 compliance and is a 'one-stop-shop' for all aspects of machinery safety and employee training issues, with consultants and engineers qualified and experienced in a wide range of industries.

Deadlines for compliance with PUWER 98: * 5th December 2003 - This first stage of compliance focussed on woodworking machinery and relates to retrofitting of braking on circular saw benches, dimension saws, powered and hand-fed cross-cut saws, single end and double-end tenoning machines incorporating a circular saw and/or tenoning attachment.

* 5th December 2005 - applies to narrow bandsaws, re-saws, vertical spindle mounding machines (unless fitted with manual or foot operated brake), hand-fed routing machines, thicknessing machines, and surface planning machines.

* 5th December 2008 - applies to any other machines not included under the earlier deadlines where the risk assessment shows braking to be necessary.
