When University of Wales College wanted to bring woodworking and metalworking machinery into compliance with current regulations a machinery safety specialist carried out the task.

In depth knowledge and professionalism 'won the day' for Fenay Machine Safety when University of Wales College, Newport wanted to bring woodworking and metalworking machinery into compliance with current regulations.

UWCN has two main workshops with an extensive range of machinery.

At the internationally renowned School of Art, Media and Design both woodworking and metalworking machines are used in creating sculptures and other design structures and elements; the School of Education uses woodworking machinery as part of its technology and design training programmes.

Following the introduction of the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER 98), UWCN needed to ensure compliance of all its equipment - totalling around 80 machines - and took the decision to use the services of an independent consultancy.

"We were introduced to Fenay Machine Safety via recommendation from other universities," explains UWCN's Health and Safety Manager, Wayne Jones.

"We were particularly impressed with the fact that they provide a written certificate of compliance for each machine on completion of work.

No other company we approached offered this service." Following an in-depth report detailing the work required to bring each individual machine into compliance with PUWER 98 requirements, Fenay Machine Safety has already completed the first phase of work in adjusting run-down times, retrofitting, renewing and up-dating guarding on both woodworking and metalworking machines, and a second phase will commence during UWCN's Summer break.

"The professionalism and in-depth knowledge of their field demonstrated by Fenay Machine Safety is excellent," concludes Jones.

Fenay Machine Safety offers a range of risk management consultancy, compliance, health and safety, training, engineering and specialist services to a wide range of industry sectors from woodworking, metalworking and construction to education, health service and event management.
