High speed machining centre reduces
downtime
Capable of machining workpieces up to 2000kg the Pollard Mori Seiki SH8000 horizontal machining centre offers faster traverses and tool-changing times and shorter pallet changeover cycles.
Capable of machining workpieces up to 2000kg in weight (2600kg as option), the Pollard Mori Seiki SH8000 horizontal machining centre offers faster traverse rates, quicker tool-changing times and shorter pallet changeover cycles These developments all contribute to minimise non-cutting times and so reduce floor-to-floor cycle times

Compact five-axis VMC offers high capacity
For the high speed machining of turbine blades and mould and die parts, Pollard Mori Seiki is offering an extremely rigid and compact, simultaneous five-axis vertical machining centre.
System proves more versatile than pallet shuttles
With experience of radial and shuttle layouts, Plenty was seeking a more compact and versatile system. A Fastems DMC-MD medium duty pallet handling installation provided the answer.
In designing its highly efficient SH8000 for large workpieces, Pollard Mori Seiki has paid special attention to reducing machining downtime and improving the as-machined accuracy of component surfaces.
The SH8000 is a moving column/traversing table design providing 30/25kW (37/30kW as option) of spindle power and up to 10,000-rev/min spindle speed (15,000-rev/min as option).
Traverse rate in all axes is up to 42m/min and acceleration rate is 3.9m/sec.

Rotary transfer machines are flexible and fast
Following an agreement with Mori Seiki, Japan, Fredk. Fredk. Pollard and Co will be offering a new series of fast rotary transfer machines. They will use the Mori Seiki FM 3-axis modules.
Tool changing time, tool-to-tool, is 2.5sec and pallet changing time is 14 sec.
In its MAPPS CNC, (Mori Advanced Production Programming System) Pollard Mori Seiki has introduced new control software, with look-ahead control functions, to improve the accuracy of machined workpiece surface shape.
For example in feed-forward mode, the look-ahead function minimises servo system delays to reduce shape errors.
MAPPS also applies automatic corner deceleration to maintain shape accuracy.
When machining arcs, feedrate acceleration is kept below a certain rate to maintain arc accuracy.
The unit also automatically reviews commands to minimize acceleration/deceleration, again to minimise shape errors.
High-grade finish-machined surfaces can be produced with the option of NURBS interpolation.
Programming MAPPS CNC is straightforward.
The operator enters dimensions and data in response to on-screen prompting in the conversational automatic programming routines.
MAPPS will then automatically select tools, cutting conditions and the most efficient machining sequence.
Two programs can be opened simultaneously and data copied and pasted between them.
CNC data can be freely up or down-loaded from memory cards, RS-232C ports or networked through optional RJ-45 porting.
MAPPS CNC features also include 3D graphic simulation, program editing, tool registration, data input/output and maintenance scheduling.
In the standard SH8000 machining centre, pallet size is 800mm by 800mm.
Axis travels are 1300mm by 1200mm by 1100mm for X, Y and Z respectively.
Pollard Mori Seiki can provide, optionally, a three-pallet rotary pallet changer or a circular six-pallet pool.
Workpiece weight capacity can be optionally increased to 2600kg.
Automatic tool change is effected by a double-arm toolchanger serving rack-type tool magazines with capacities of 60, 150, 240 or 330 tools.
Magazine location is at the side of the machining center with all tool probing operations being carried out while the tool is still in the magazine area, thus saving precious cycle time.
Coolant systems include oil-mist and through-spindle types.
The standard main spindle will accelerate in 3.9sec from 0 to 10,000 rev/min and decelerate in 3.8sec.
Optional spindles are available for 30/25kW power at 15,000 rev/min or heavy cutting duty at 15/22kW or 37/30kW at up to 6000 rev/min.
Real machining capacity is illustrated by the face-milling of medium carbon steels at a metal removal rate of 773cm3/min.
The face mill with six tungsten carbide inserts is 125mm diameter and operates at 600 rev/min at a feedrate of 1120mm/min.
Depth and width of cut is 6.9mm and 100mm respectively.
Using a 50mm diameter end mill with six tungsten carbide inserts, a metal removal rate of 34.5cm3/min can be realised.
Spindle speed is 190rev/min and feedrate 69mm/min.
Depth of cut is 10mm.
Metal removal rate for drilling in a medium carbon steel is typically 173cm3/min using a 65mm solid carbide drill at 130 rev/min and feedrate of 52mm/min All these features of the SH8000 combine to reduce downtime during machining cycles on heavy components and improve overall manufacturing efficiency.
