Compact five-axis VMC offers high capacity
For the high speed machining of turbine blades and mould and die parts, Pollard Mori Seiki is offering an extremely rigid and compact, simultaneous five-axis vertical machining centre.
System proves more versatile than pallet shuttles
With experience of radial and shuttle layouts, Plenty was seeking a more compact and versatile system. A Fastems DMC-MD medium duty pallet handling installation provided the answer.
The MT2000Z has a single headstock with tailstock and lower turret and the MT2000S twin headstocks with no lower turret respectively.
The basic MT2000 does not have the lower turret or second headstock Designed with an exceptionally stiff structure, the machines will produce complex workpieces from tough, non-ferrous or ferrous alloys, such as hydraulic valve spools and clutch housings, high-speed centrifuge components, crankshafts and pump and valve parts.
Turning capacity is up to 550mm diameter by 1020mm and maximum swing over bed is 850mm diameter.

Compact CNC chuckers offer plenty of power
Pollard Mori Seiki's extremely compact CL Series of CNC chucking lathes offer superior rigidity to support continuous high speed machining of production components.
Long-bed machining centre is built for speed
A substantial three-way guideway system, which supports the longitudinal travel of a moving column, provides theSVL5020 long-bed VMC with plenty rigidity for the high speed milling.
High speed machining centre reduces downtime
Capable of machining workpieces up to 2000kg the Pollard Mori Seiki SH8000 horizontal machining centre offers faster traverses and tool-changing times and shorter pallet changeover cycles.
The main headstock is rated at 15/11kW and has steplessly variable speeds up to 4500 rev/min.
The opposing headstock is rated at 7.5/5kW and 6000 rev/min.
C-axis rotational speed is up to 300 rev/min.
Alternatively, with the MT2000S and MT2000, a programmable tailstock is supplied which has 150mm of travel.
A fixed MT4 or live MT5 centre is fitted.
All versions feature the versatile machining head, which is mounted on a substantial carriage.
The carriage has 565mm of travel (X1-axis) on a generous 260mm wide guideway on the travelling column.
The column has 1077mm of travel (Z1-axis) on a substantial 557mm wide guideway.
A high precision servo-worm drive rotates the head through +/-120 deg and is programmable in 0.001 deg increments.
It has a generous Y-axis travel of +/-80mm.
Fast indexing time through 90 degrees is just 2 sec.
Rotational speeds of the machining head are up to 27 rev/min (B-axis).
The head accepts Sandvik Coromant Capto C6 or KM63 tooling exchanged by a double-arm toolchanger from a chain magazine mounted at the back of the machine.
Tool change time is 1.6 sec tool-to-tool and magazine capacities range from basic 20 tools up to 180 tools.
Tools can be up to 125mm diameter by 280mm long.
The versatile machining head can work at either headstock in the MT2000S machine.
While operations are being performed by the machining head, a lower 12-station turret, equipped with turning or live tooling, can simultaneously work at either headstock.
The turret has an indexing time of 0.26 sec, station-to-station, and travels of 155mm (X2-axis) and 1067mm (Z2-axis).
In terms of rigidity, the whole machine structure has been designed with the aid of finite element analysis to arrive at the massive triangular bed and substantial guideways.
The headstocks and machining head are oil-cooled to ensure high precision.
Turning tests in gunmetal, using a 0.4mm nose radius diamond tool turning 47mm outside diameter at 0.05mm/rev produced a roundness accuracy of 0.5 micron and a surface finish of 1.26 micron Ry.
The CNC unit is the Mori Seiki MSG 501, which features full automatic programming with graphic simulation and prompting.
It allows an operator to quickly build up a combined nine-axis program for turning, boring, threading, milling, drilling, pattern drilling and many other operations.
The CNC includes Mori Seiki's MAPPS operation management functions.
Its process menu includes Y-axis machining, time study, automatic machine sequencing, back-end turning, tool lists and simulation.
All programming is carried out from one sliding control panel, which will also swing out through 90 degrees for easy access by the operator when setting up and editing work programs.
Machining capability is illustrated by the turning of S45C carbon steel at a cutting speed of 120m/min.
A depth of cut of 7mm can be taken at 750 rev/min using a feedrate of 0.4mm/rev.
A typical drilling operation, using a 40mm diameter HSS drill at 200 rev/min, can be carried out in S45C steel at an infeed rate of 0.16mm/rev.
An example of face milling, in S45C steel, is the use of an 80mm diameter cutter, using a 2mm depth of cut and feed of 0.2mm/rev at 1000 rev/min.
The MT2000 series is one of the toughest, most rigid and accurate, heavy-duty mill-turn centres yet produced by Mori Seiki.
First shown at the EMO exhibition in Hannover during September 2001, all MT2000 variants are now available from Pollard Mori Seiki. Request a free brochure from Mori Seiki UK ...
