Mori Seiki reports that order levels for its NL Series CNC lathes are still running at 180 machines/month and some 2000 have been sold world-wide - 11 months after its launch Mori Seiki's NL Series lathes, synonymous with precision and rigidity, will be on display at MACH 2006

Within 11 months of its launch 2000 had been sold worldwide, and order levels are still running at 180 machines/month.

Static and dynamic analysis of the machine's structure during the design phase resulted in 100% greater contortional rigidity for the bed and 50% greater for the spindle when compared with the previous model.

Slideways have been constructed 30% wider than on conventional machines and are the largest in their class, resulting in unprecedented levels of stability for both turning and milling.

The greater stiffness enables the machine to achieve improved acceleration and deceleration times, with 0 to 4000 rev/min possible in 3.4s.

The NL turret is also designed with stability as a key element.

The rotary tool holders are built with a broader grip, and the rotary spindle uses a direct drive motor, eliminating gears and belts for high speed milling operations.

Depths of cut equal to the tool diameter can be achieved without chatter marks - the spindle torque for the NL2500 is 40Nm, providing the power for reliable machining with a high quality finish through low vibration levels.

Despite the increased rigidity, the NL Series offers a 'best in class' through spindle capacity, which ranges from 61mm on the NL1500 to 91mm on the NL2500.

In addition, the Y-axis platform, again designed for strength offers +/-60mm on the NL3000.

Further contribution to accuracy is provided by the thermal isolation integrated into the NL Series.

Resiting the oil cooler behind the machine has eliminated it as a heat source, while a fully covered bed reduces heat transmission from the chips.

Oil cooling jackets surround the spindle, milling turret and the ball screw bearings, dramatically reducing heat transmission and contributing to the 576mlitre/minute machining rates which the NL Series can achieve.

A further endorsement of the capabilities of this popular lathe is provided by The Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers, which awarded Mori Seiki the 2004 JSME Medal for New Technology for the development of the 'turret with a built-in motor' used in the NL Series.
