Latest additions to swarf and coolant management systems include: oil skimmers, coalescer systems and low cost odour control tablets - designed to optimise coolant usage, save tool life.

In this day and age it pays to take good care of your coolant For as well as improving machining efficiency, the use, care, treatment and disposal of such cutting fluids have major implications in terms of health and safety and environmental legislation

Then, of course, there is the cost element to consider.

Against this backdrop, Filtration Service Engineering (FSE) of Kidderminster, has introduced a new series of cutting fluid 'care' products, following its appointment as UK distributor for a leading range of coolant equipment made in the USA.

These latest additions to FSE's existing portfolio of swarf and coolant management systems include: oil skimmers (and diverters), coalescer systems and low cost odour control tablets - products designed to optimise coolant usage, increase the performance of water-based cutting fluids and extend tooling life cycles.

Three main types of mechanical oil skimmer are available to eliminate tramp oils, prevent rancidity and other health hazards and extend the life of coolant.

Rope-type skimmers skim from underneath the swarf conveyor, or on the back of a lathe, have a reach of 200 to 1520mm and feature a long-lasting ceramic scrapper on the outside of the unit.

Belt skimmers can be supplied in four standard sizes (with reaches from 200 to 600mm) and they can remove around 4 litres of oil per hour by wiping both sides of the belt.

While Disc skimmers have an unbreakable disc, a patented gravity separator, wipers that do not need adjustment and ratings of 1 litre per hour.

Prices for Rope skimming systems start from GBP 170.00, Belt skimming systems from GBP 225.00 and Disc skimming systems from GBP 120.00 Coalescer systems continuously skim, aerate and filter coolant to extend the life of water-based fluids and the tooling being used.

Three systems are available from FSE and these can be specified with different performance options including: a coalescing cartridge (to increase the surface area for coalescing oil), a sumpster unit (which removes floating oils without introducing air) and a fine stopper (for floating chips or swarf.).

As far as costs go, coalescer systems are priced from GBP 360.00 Lastly, we come to odour control tablets which are recommended for coolant sumps of 750 litres or less.

Safe and easy to use and cheap to buy (from GBP 14.50 per tube of 15), these blue tablets prevent odours such as hydrogen sulphide (rotten eggs).

They are not biocides or fungicides and contain no formaldehyde or formaldehyde-releasing chemicals.

One tablet per week per 100 litres of sump coolant is all you need to eliminate the odours created by anaerobic bacteria.
