Water soluble metalworking fluid meets HSE guide
A water soluble metalworking fluid has been developed in response to the new Health and Safety Executive guidelines, concerning the control of bacterial contamination in used coolants.
Richard Rogers, Industrial product manager at Fuchs UK, explained, "The Ecocool Ultralife range represents 'Advanced Coolantology,' a concept that simply explains what we have achieved with this range; innovative coolant technology that satisfies the demands of the UK metalworking industry in today's competitive market".
Rogers added, "Approximately 18 months ago, FUCHS UK created a project team, of chemists and application engineers, with one simple aim; to re-examine the key performance criteria for water soluble cutting fluids - considering current and future implications from HSE guidelines, biocide directives and waste disposal issues - and develop a market focused cutting fluid range with 'best in class' performance".
The outcome of this project is Ecocool Ultralife: a range of coolants designed to offer optimum machining performance and surface finish, especially when used in modern CNC machines, as well as provide the ultimate machine cleanliness for an improved working environment.

* Slower bacterial growth - Fuchs told manufacturingtalk.com that one of the unique selling points of the Ecocool Ultralife range is the biologically hard nature of the products, which, during laboratory development tests and "real world" field trials, showed slower bacterial growth compared to standard water soluble fluids in identical situations.
Following six months of "real world" field tests, the case study documentation gathered by the Fuchs team showed a reduced propensity to bacteria growth than conventional fluids, when operating in identical environments.
These findings are, commercially, very important to manufacturers as Paul Littley, Research and Development spokesman at Fuchs UK explained: "The presence of bacteria will degrade the technical performance properties of water soluble fluids, as they create an acid environment that causes the coolant to separate and lose its lubricant characteristics".
He continued: "Our new Ultralife range creates an environment where bacteria find it difficult to proliferate".
"This in turn provides extended coolant life, reduces the need for tank side additions and reduces maintenance and monitoring in machine shops".
"This consequently reduces fluid consumption, reduces waste generation and minimises disposal costs".
"Manufacturers can not fail to notice the cost advantages that these products bring".
These benefits have given rise to the name 'Ultralife', but extended life does not only apply to the coolant.
The products' extremely stable emulsion has also been proven in comparative studies to reduce wear and extend tool life by up to 20%.
The Ecocool Ultralife range has been designed to lubricate and cool effectively, even with coated tooling types, which are becoming more popular within machine shops.
Apart from improved coolant longevity and bacterial resistance, the Ecocool Ultralife range was designed by benchmarking competitor grades against key performance criteria, as identified by the Fuchs project team, and the recently modernised and refurbished research and development laboratories at the Fuchs UK site in Stoke-on-Trent was the base for this comparative study.
Foaming, detergency, tramp oil rejection and stain protection were just some of the key performance indicators used to give 'best in class' performance for the Ecocool Ultralife range.
