Packaged boiler room maintains hospital steam

Fulton Boiler Works has supplied a purpose-built, prefabricated boiler room to Burnley General Hospital.

Fulton Boiler Works has supplied a purpose-built, prefabricated boiler room to Burnley General Hospital to ensure that an uninterrupted supply of steam is available during the building of a new wing, backed by the Government's Private Finance Initiative.

The pre-packaged boiler room, which is housed in a specially built, double-skinned steel enclosure, was constructed to PM5 standard at Fulton's factory in Bristol and equipped with three Fulton 60J dual-fuel boilers and ancillary equipment, including full condensate return and blowdown vessels.

The new plant room was specified by Building Design Partnership of Manchester and installed by Inviron, and will be supported with a Fulton two year maintenance contract.

Commenting for Inviron, project manager Bob Smallwood says: "Part of the existing steam main was decommissioned to make way for the new wing.

With the original steam supply to be cut off to a section of the hospital, we also needed to provide a new steam supply to the Victoria Block.

"So besides building the plant room to specification, Fulton had to ensure that everything was fully operational and pre-commissioned prior to delivery.

This enabled us to simply connect it to the modified existing steam main after a further site commissioning; ensuring that the Victoria Block's supply of steam for hot water and heating is maintained.".
