Following a continuous programme of updating which started in 2001, the full line-up of GE Fanuc's 400V Alpha i Series of servo and spindle drive motors has now been completed for the European market As well as some new models being added to the range, a power failure back-up module, with 400V input, has been introduced as well

High CNC lathe reliability now comes at low cost
That GE Fanuc has released its Power Mate 0 control will be welcomed by lathe manufacturers wishing to have a simple and reliable CNC for their machines without suffering cost penalties.
Higher productivity with better surface finish - the GE Fanuc AC Servo Motor Alpha i Series (both 200V and 400V), is intended for axis feed in machine tools and features higher acceleration characteristics and very smooth rotation for higher productivity and much improved surface finish respectively.
Torque outputs of the new 400V full line-up now extends from as little as 2Nm through 13 carefully chosen steps up to a full 1000Nm giving machine designers every opportunity of selecting a motor close to matching any type of application efficiently.
Furthermore, the three larger sizes of 300, 500 and 1000Nm are believed to be unmatched in the industry and so provide machine tool builders with brand new opportunities in the use of such intelligent servo motors.

Several additional I/O links have become available for the Series 16i, 18i and 21i CNCs, which will benefit machine builders and users alike.
CNC choice ensures entry level success
Harrison says that a huge untapped market exists among conventional lathe users for a basic CNC model like the Alpha T equipped with the latest GE Fanuc Power Mate 'O' control.
Greater flexibility - in recognition of the growing pressures to save space within modern, sophisticated machine tools, the physical size of all motors in the new range have effectively been downsized.
In fact, by comparison with their predecessors, they are as much as 23 per cent smaller which provides for greater flexibility in machine tool design, especially since they are totally self-contained units.
Another feature of the range is the availability of compact pulsecoders with a super-high resolution of 1,000,000/revolution as standard or 16,000,000/revolution optional.
An additional 4Nm model, designated a4/3000HVi and driven by a 20A amplifier, is planned for release in 2002 to fill the gap between the current 2Nm and 8Nm models.
New smaller, faster, more powerful spindle motors - similar changes have been made to the 400V range of GE Fanuc AC Spindle Motors of the Alpha i Series The full line-up for these popular high-speed, low-vibration, motors extends from 0.55 up to 100kW and now exhibit greater torque output at low speed than hitherto.
This has been made possible by the adoption of special winding switching control bringing with it the added benefit of reducing the time taken to accelerate up to full speed.
The new series motors are some seven per cent smaller than the older models in terms of their length and yet the output power at high speeds has been increased - as have their maximum speed capabilities.
New integral spindle motors for 400V operation - based on the current 200V line of integral spindle motors, the new 400V Alpha B i Series of integral motors are now released.
There are ten different frame sizes to choose from with additional choices from a variety of core-length options.
They can be driven by the corresponding GE Fanuc 400V Alpha i Series amplifiers from a newly extended range featuring these dramatically downsized units.
Improved energy saving has arisen through the adoption of the latest power device technology within these units.
The new AC 400V input type power failure back-up module applies to both the Alpha Series and the Alpha i Series Taken together these new models and upgrades represent further significant steps by GE Fanuc to enable machine tool builders to offer their customers the benefits of improved productivity without significant increases in costs, thereby increased competitiveness.
