3D CNC collision check function improved

Fanuc GE has developed a 3D interference check function, which helps prevent machine collisions for the Series 30i/31i model A CNC controllers and a data exchange is possible with CAD systems.

High-tech machine tools such as machining/milling centres or 5-axis machines promise extremely efficient machining However, it is becoming more and more difficult for machine operators to follow the quick and complex machining

A manually triggered stop is practically impossible in the event of an impending collision, said Fanuc GE.

For this reason, the company has developed the 3D interference check function.

It helps prevent machine collisions for the Series 30i/31i model A CNC controllers.

Further developments of the configuration software, the so-called setting tool, now also allow a data exchange with CAD systems.

With the setting tool for 3D interference check, the machine manufacturer - and, if desired, the machine operator - can define all areas at risk of collision (such as tool head, workpiece, table and clamping devices) using geometric contour figures.

These 'enveloping spaces' represent a virtual taboo zone.

The CNC controller takes into account the spatial information together with the current tool data when calculating axis movements and reliably prevents possible collisions.

The last interpolation step before entering a defined enveloping body is not carried out - the machine stops.

The setting tool, which can be run under Windows 2000 / XP / Vista operating systems, facilitates the definition of objects at risk of collision for the user by supporting data exchange with 3D CAD systems.

The desired CAD elements can be loaded onto the PC via an IGES interface and processed for collision monitoring in the setting tool.

The complete interference check can be transmitted to the CNC controller via Ethernet or a high-speed bus.

Similarly, the CNC controller signals the position information of the interference check back to the setting tool in real-time, and the movement is then displayed in a 3D animation.

Possible collisions are additionally displayed in plain text.

If the machine stops during milling due to a detected collision risk, it is possible for the machine operator - with continuous active monitoring - to manually withdraw the affected axes.

The collision is thus reliably prevented even if an incorrect button is unintentionally pressed.
