Academy election for Raindrop Geomagic co-founder
Raindrop Geomagic co-founder Edelsbrunner elected to American Academy of Arts and Sciences
Dr Herbert Edelsbrunner, co-founder and board member of Raindrop Geomagic and a professor of computer science and mathematics at Duke University, has been elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences' 2005 class of Fellows.
Dr Edelsbrunner was selected for his outstanding contributions to his discipline and society at large.
He will be inducted on October 8 in an annual ceremony at the Academy's headquarters in Cambridge, Mass.
Fellows are nominated and elected to the Academy by current members.
This year's Fellows include Nobel Prize-winning physicist Eric Cornell, Supreme Court Chief Justice William Rehnquist, sculptor and painter Jeff Koons, Academy Award-winning actor and director Sidney Poitier, journalist Tom Brokaw, Google co-founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page, and dramatist Horton Foote.
"It is an honor to be elected by the Academy," says Edelsbrunner.
"I look forward to the induction ceremony and meeting all the distinguished members." An accomplished mathematician and scientist, Dr Edelsbrunner gained international acclaim for his research in algorithms, geometry and topology.
He is the only computer scientist to be awarded the National Science Foundation's Alan T Waterman Award, and has received numerous government and industrial grants to further his work.
Dr Edelsbrunner is the author of more than 150 research papers and has two books to his credit.
Dr Edelsbrunner co-founded Raindrop Geomagic with CEO and president Ping Fu in 1996 and still serves as the company's chief technical consultant.
His mathematical theory for restructuring any shape or surface from an unorganized set of 3D data points forms the theoretical underpinnings of the company's signature software products, Geomagic Studio and Geomagic Qualify.
