Digital servos suit heavy machine tools

A rating output of 100kW and a maximum instantaneous output of 200kW or 1900Nm torque make this digital servo motor ideal for large machine tools such as power presses.

GE Fanuc Automation has announced the extension upwards of its i series digital servo motor range, with the introduction of the new Model M1000HVi, having a rating output of 100kW and a maximum instantaneous output of 200kW or 1900Nm torque Intended applications are users and builders of large machine tools, in particular metal forming presses and electric injection moulding machines

As with the other four models in the line-up, starting with one of 11kW rated output, the new model is available with a 400V input specification as an alternative to the standard 200V input.

The large, powerful GE Fanuc servo motors come with significant improvements in instantaneous as well as maximum output torque and it is these features, combined with their exceptionally smooth and rapid acceleration, that are of interest to heavy machinery manufacturers.

New digital servo adapter (DSA) - several injection moulding machine builders now specify the big new servo motor series for their machines and the take-up is expected to increase now that GE Fanuc can provide a "Digital Servo Adapter" (DSA) to connect the GE Fanuc Digital Servo to the machine controller.

Most injection moulding machine manufacturers prefer to retain their own specialised controllers as were first applied to their hydraulic injection type machines.

It is for this reason, as well as to maintain the same feel and look of the operating screens, that GE Fanuc and FANUC worked with major machine builders to develop this unique adapter.

Press manufacturers are also taking increasing advantage of the availability of GE Fanuc's new big servo motors.

A number of benefits were first spelt out to the industry at a conference called last year to study servo presses.

These benefits apply equally to both large and small presses and include high accuracy forming, freely programmable slide stroke and motion patterns, energy saving and lower noise levels One press manufacturer commenting on his GE Fanuc AC servo-driven CNC forming machine said: "This is the realisation of intelligent forming with sophisticated control techniques for a variety of processes, high adaptability to various parts - even in small batch sizes - and an improved working environment because the resultant press is both smaller and quieter".

The system has also been deemed suitable for unmanned night-shift operation.

The large AC Servo Motors are mounted with a Pulsecoder (standard: 1 million divisions/revolution, option:16 million divisions/revolution), for long-term accuracy.

The press manufacturer cited above has incorporated a full closed-loop feedback of the slide position from a linear scale, in conjunction with the high-resolution rotary encoder in the AC servo motor, to ensure the highest possible accuracy.

This eliminates external thermal and load influences to give a 1 micron positioning accuracy at nominal load.

Presses fitted with the new large AC servo motors can benefit from freely programmable slide stroke and motion patterns, thereby giving greater scope for die set designers to eliminate unnecessary slide motions.

Finally, two other features of the new servo motors are: 1) the possibility for regenerative braking of AC servo motors, enabling generated electrical power to be returned to the power supply, thereby realizing significant energy savings; and 2) a marked improvement in maintenance by utilizing fully the built-in ID information facility.
