Machine tool and CAM providers combine forces

A Gibbs and Associates product story
Edited by the Manufacturingtalk editorial team Apr 5, 2006

Metal cutting CAM provider Gibbs and Associates and CNC machine tool builder Mori Seiki have set up a collaboration agreement over post processors and machine simulation models development.

Gibbs and Associates, developer of GibbsCAM CAM software for programming CNC machine tools, and Mori Seiki, an industry leading machine tool vendor, have entered into a collaboration agreement which will result in GibbsCAM configurations, post processors and machine simulation models mutually developed by Gibbs and by Mori Seiki for their range of mill/turn machine tools.

These will be checked for functionality in various scenarios in order to verify that the MTM posts and simulation models generate proper output which customers can be confident are good.

Mill/turn, or multi-task machining, is one of the fastest growing segments in the machine tool market due to their ability to reduce manual labor and completely machine parts.

At the same time, the complexity that these machine tools represents also makes programming them efficiently extremely challenging.

GibbsCAM signature ease-of-use plays a very important role in GibbsCAM's ability to handle complex multi-task programs.

"Prior to this agreement with Mori Seiki," states Robb Weinstein, Gibbs' senior vice president Sales and Strategic Planning, "We already had considerable experience supporting their product line due to its prominence in the market.

This collaboration will allow us to work even more closely with Mori Seiki to ensure the highest level of support for their machine tools' capabilities.

We look forward to offering Mori Seiki customers this degree of support combined with GibbsCAM's industry leading ease-of-use allowing them to reduce their costs associated with implementing multi-task machining technology." As part of this agreement, GibbsCAM software will also be made available to Mori Seiki technical centers around the world.

Mori Seiki application engineers will be able to use GibbsCAM to develop complex programs that will demonstrate the full range of capabilities of Mori Seiki's machine tools.

"By working with leading CAM software vendors such as Gibbs and Associates," added Dr Fujishima, development director for Mori Seiki, "We are able to give our customers the assurance that there is a programming solution available to meet their needs when investing in our latest generation NT range of our multi-tasking machine tools." With GibbsCAM, CNC programmers have a complete solution to programming parts for multi-tasking machine tools.

Up until now, CAM products required customers to invest considerable time to develop post processors and machine definitions.

As MTM machine tools increase in complexity and with each MTM machine tool configuration's uniqueness, users are asking vendors for MTM post processors implemented for their specific MTM machine tool.

By working directly with the machine tool builder to deliver complete pre-configured and factory-tested solutions for MTM machine tools, GibbsCAM's 'out-of-the-box' NC programming solution minimizes this complicated and costly implementation process.

It would be extremely costly for customers to develop a comparable level of experience, skill, and resources comparable to what Gibbs and Associates has to provide these software solutions.
