In 1899, Frederick W.
Robertshaw, a father of eight children who complained about being alternately scalded or frozen by their home water supply, realized that the flow to gas to his home water heater should be controlled automatically.
After extensive experimentation, he invented a device to sense the after temperature and to control the flow to gas.
This device was made of selected copper tubing, which expands when heated, and a carbon rod, which does not : it was an immediate success! In 1907 Mr.Robertshaw formed a company to market this device, that later was reorganized to the Robertshaw Controls Company.
Today Robertshaw is an Invensys company, a member of its Climate Control Division.
Invensys is the global leader in the automation and controls industry.
With its head office in London, England and over 30,000 employees, it operates globally through four divisions - Intelligent Automation, Industrial Drive Systems, Power Systems and Controls.
Robertshaw of Longbeach California was faced with the challenge of increasing production requirements that allowed continuos variation of product specifications.
To machine a series of water heating gas valves Robertshaw chose the Giuliani transfer machine TRT 15/24.
Besides rapid cycle times and high precision performance, Giuliani became the machine of choice, versus their current machining centers, due to the flexibility offered.
The partnership between Robertshaw and Giuliani resulted in a complete turnkey system with an integrated robotics part handling and conveyorized process both to and from the machine.
