A power honing machine finishes hardened spur and helical gears using a directly driven honing head and a wide variety of tooling systems.

Following the recent EMO 2007 exhibition, Gleason sent Manufacturingtalk a report on its revolutionary 150SPH Power Honing Machine (patents pending) It uses the advanced Spheric Honing system for finishing hardened spur and helical gears

Claimed to offer more economy and quality, the 150SPH has a directly driven honing head with speeds of up to 3,000 rev/min and a wide variety of tool systems to satisfy the various requirements of different component geometries.

Gear honing achieves low-noise surfaces or can be used for machining involving interfering contours.

The latest version of the Spheric Honing software runs on the Siemens 840D CNC.

In addition to simple, graphically-aided data input, the software also provides process data calculation.

In combination with simple-to-change fixtures and tools, the system could not be any more user-friendly, said Gleason.

The integrated loading system facilitates short loading and non-productive times, as well as a link to the user's own automation concepts.

Gleason added that this machine is based on the experience of over 150 Gleason-Hurth honing machines sold, and its technology shows the way forward for maximum productivity and quality.

Capacities are as follows.

* Nominal work piece diameter is 150mm.

* Nominal module range is 0.5-4mm.

* Maximum face width is 50mm.
