South Wales based FSG Tool and Die was a double winner at the recent Production Engineering Solutions Awards ceremony held at the GTMA 60th Anniversary Lunch at the Savoy Hotel, London.
The toolkit introduces young people aged 11 - 14, to the science of measurement through its practical application.
Julia Moore, Director of the GTMA, explains the Association's backing for the project; "As the UK's leading trade association representing toolmaking and metrology, the GTMA is delighted to support this bold initiative.
We are particularly delighted that students will be encouraged to meet practicing engineers to understand how essential metrology is to the creation of precision engineering components." The value of each toolkit is in the region of GBP 1000 and the cost is being met by members of the Metrology Section of the GTMA, the Tooling Trust and the National Physical Laboratory.
Each toolkit contains instruments including: micrometers, calipers, steel rules, gauge blocks as well as a selection of test pieces which have all been generously donated; GTMA member companies who have participated include: Bowers Metrology, Mahr UK, Mitutoyo (UK), Select Gauges (2000), Steelcraft Precision Tools, The L S Starrett Co, Yorkshire Precision Gauges.

Each kit also includes a Teacher's Guide, documentation linking the kit with the education Numeracy Strategy, Teachers Notes and evaluation forms for both teachers and students.
The Metrology Toolkits are held by various Setpoints around the country, from where local schools can borrow them at no cost.
Pilot trials were carried out in Leicestershire schools with great success, proving that the practical application of mathematics can be integrated into the curriculum.
