An advanced manufacturing kit provides GTMA member companies with the opportunity not only of receiving training on the latest manufacturing software, but of using it free for a year.

The GTMA has launched its new Advanced Manufacturing Kit - AMK - providing member companies with the opportunity not only of receiving training on the latest manufacturing software, but of using it - free of charge - for a year Against the dramatic back-drop of Coombe Abbey, where the association was holding its annual dinner, GTMA director Julia Moore and David O'Hara, OEM sales manager, Vero International Software, sponsors of the first AMK module, officially launched the initiative, which will go live at the beginning of 2004

AMK has been designed to increase the level of high tech skills in UK manufacturing, which, particularly in the SME sector, can lag behind overseas competitors.

Advanced, fully proven software will be provided at no cost, for twelve months, on a first-come, first-served basis to GTMA member companies who provide evidence that it will be used by a member of staff who is participating in a training programme and who propose a suitable application project.

Module 1, from Vero International Software, consists of the VISI-Series CAD/CAM software, which will be supplied to the first six lucky companies to satisfy the very straightforward eligibility criteria, details of which are available from the GTMA.

O'Hara commented, "Making VISI-Series available to this new audience will undoubtedly encourage skills development in a sector that sometimes struggles to attract the calibre of people needed as the engineers of the future.

The AMK initiative presents the ideal opportunity for individuals and companies alike to demonstrate their willingness to embrace leading edge design and manufacturing techniques." It is anticipated that future AMK Modules will include EDM, CNC simulation, and engineering project management software.

The GTMA has been delighted to be able to offer this opportunity to its members.

Moore commented, "It is appropriate to launch this learning initiative here in Coombe Abbey which with its monastic origins, almost a thousand years ago, spread the light of knowledge and education into the world.

One of the GTMA's primary purposes is to increase the UK's competitive edge in manufacturing.

We believe that AMK will provide companies who would not otherwise be able to "put a toe in the water" with a real opportunity to experience the benefits of the latest technology first hand, in their own work environment, on their own projects, at no cost and with full support and training for the successful companies".
