GTMA has successfully applied to participate in a new ICT scoping study, Tooling and Experiential Design Initiative, to assess the possibility of using web-accessible IT design tools.

GTMA has successfully applied to participate in a new ICT scoping study, TEDI (Tooling and Experiential Design Initiative), to assess the possibility of using web-accessible, knowledge-based IT design tools to boost the competitiveness of the UK toolmaking industry Together with four partners: Corus Automotive Engineering, Brunel University, Dzus Fasteners and Technology Application Network (TANet), GTMA will be involved in providing information regarding the current state of UK toolmaking, its place in world rankings and its projected future shape by 2008

As nearly every wealth creating sector relies on experience gained and redeployed by individuals, the potential for the advantageous application of ICT based knowledge capture and semi-automated/interactive application - Knowledge Based Engineering (KBE) - exists for every industry.

The TEDI project will consider the potential for KBE across a range of industries by concentrating on one sample sector - toolmaking.

GTMA director, Julia Moore, commented, "In order to stay competitive UK toolmakers need to make a massive leap in their design/value add contribution.

In an industry that is dominated by SMEs, Knowledge Based Engineering can potentially provide a route to hugely increased productivity, which is why the association is delighted to be participating in this important fast-track study, which will be completed by April 2004.".
