Batch blasting cleans up small diecastings

Batch blasting is the ideal cost effective solution for deburring, cosmetic finishing or surface preparation of high volumes of small zinc or magnesium die-castings commonly used in both the consumer electrical and electronic sector and increasingly in the automotive component sector.

Sometimes it is necessary to electro plate magnesium components or create a cosmetic finish on them and in these instances blasting with glass bead can be the best solution to provide the right surface preparation.

To achieve this finish in a cost effective way many companies have found that the Guyson EB1 - endless belt tumble blast machine is the perfect choice.

Equipped with four air blast nozzles which are highly controllable for direction, coverage and impact pressure of the media, unlike many of the larger endless belt machines that use turbine wheels, the EB1 gives the quality of finish required in a small footprint and the flexibility to use other softer blast medias such as glass or plastic bead if the surface preparation demands it.

Magnesium imparts many properties into its components such as strength and lightness but presents challenges of its own to overcome when it comes to being blast finished.

As one of the industries leading exponents with over 65 years of manufacturing blast finishing equipment these pose no problem to Guyson and suitable safeguards are designed into our equipment to tackle the potentially explosive dust from this material.

In fact one of the world's leading precision die casters of zinc, aluminium and magnesium alloys, recently up rated their existing EB1 tumbleblast machine (which had been used on other projects) to make it safe to blast magnesium components for a desirable cosmetic finish.

To minimise any threat of explosion from magnesium dust the machine was fitted with a new CY600-16 cyclone coupled via rigid metal ducting to a C800 dust collector.

For increased safety the ducting is wrapped with earth bonding straps and removable panels for regular internal cleaning.

The C800 dust collector is equipped with an explosion relief panel and after-filter to remove even finer particles being returned to the work-shop air.
