A high-speed rotary indexing unit offers high precision positioning with accurate repeatability for positioning parts on CNC milling machines and machining centres.

The DD200 high speed, high torque gearless rotary indexing unit has super-precise positioning and repeatability for machining parts that need extremely accurate angular positioning The unit can also be used for high speed, high accuracy contouring applications

Added to its Direct-Drive Rotary Systems products, Hardinge said that the unit's direct-drive design eliminates backlash.

It also has high servo stiffness and extremely rapid and accurate bi-directional response with repeatability of +/-2 arc-sec.

The DD200 unit's benefits include the following.

* Super-precision positioning and repeatability for consistent, high precision machining.

* Up to 2,100 deg/s indexing speed.

* 'Wrap around' torque motor reduces unit required space.

* Zero backlash with high servo stiffness provides rapid bi-directional movements.

* The patent-pending unit manages heat dissipation and maintains stability of the center line of the spindle to maximize process capability.

* 4-axis integration is supported by FANUC and Heidenhain and maximises machine capability including 'look-ahead' programming for high speed machining.

* Semi 4-axis operation uses Hardinge's stand-alone servo control for CNC machines that can't support 'pole position detect'.

* A 10in (254mm) slotted face plate eases clamping on a generous surface.

* A flexible spindle accepts collets and allows quick changeover between collets, expanding collets, step chucks, power chucks and face plates without needing an adapter.

The Hardinge DD200 has a direct-drive, rare-earth, permanent-magnet torque motor.

This frameless motor 'wraps' around the spindle.

A high resolution +/-0.077 arc-sec encoder is mounted directly to the spindle enabling +/-3 arc-sec system accuracy to be realised for extremely accurate positioning.

A rugged, permanently lubricated, cross roller bearing provides extra rigidity.

The bearing has no brushes to wear or to make dust.

Therefore, the unit has a smooth quiet operation, and its life is expected to outlast the host machine.

A pneumatic collet closer is equipped with a dual cylinder resulting in 4560 lbf (2068kgf) of adjustable draw bar pull.

A brake clamp is incorporated to handle aggressive off-center drilling and other high-force machining operations.

A rugged clamping torque of 233ft.lb (315Nm) prevents non-slip of the workpiece during those rigorous applications.

* Increase gripping capability to the machining center - by using standard 16C collets, expanding collets, and step chucks for gripping up to 6in (152.4mm) diameters, workpiece gripping capability is increased.

The gripping is in the spindle, closest to the spindle bearings.

This design is unlike surface-mounted adapters that are used on traditional rotary tables.

A power chuck bolts directly on the A2-5 spindle face, while a 254mm slotted faceplate accommodates clamping.

Common spindle tooling can be shared between the Hardinge DD200 Rotary System and a lathe.
