One of the UK's leading convenience food manufacturers has invested in two Hanovia UV water disinfection systems for its South Yorkshire factory The medium pressure UV units disinfect water used to wash down the surfaces of production equipment which has come into contact with food

By permanently killing bacteria, viruses and moulds, medium pressure UV ensures the wash water is free from Cryptosporidium and other potentially harmful microorganisms.

It is a completely clean technology which leaves no taint and has no effect on the taste, colour or odour of food.

The two UV units treat up to 7m3 of mains water per hour, the only pre-treatment being the addition of 1ppm of chlorine - a standard procedure.

All disinfection procedures are data-logged, allowing the company to produce permanent records for environmental health inspectors.

"We are very happy with the way the medium pressure UV units are working," commented the Facilities Manager.

"They are easy to operate and maintain, and in conjunction with chlorine, provide us with complete peace of mind by ensuring our process is contaminant-free." Recent research has shown that microorganisms are permanently killed by UV from medium pressure lamps, while there is some chance of them recovering when exposed to UV from low pressure lamps.

For this reason it is recommended that operators always opt for medium pressure UV technology, particularly if the UV-treated water is to be stored for any length of time before use.
