Medium pressure UV disinfection purifies
water
To ensure wash and process water remains free from pathogens such as Cryptosporidium, a food manufacturer has installed a UV disinfection system to purify water used in processing.

UV water disinfection knocks out the bugs
One of the UK's leading convenience food manufacturers has invested in two UV water disinfection systems to permanently kill bacteria, viruses and moulds.
"We take the purity of our water very seriously," commented the Project Engineer.
"It passes through an iron and manganese removal filter first, followed by a 0.2 micron Kelsep membrane filter before it reaches the UV system.
This 'belt and braces' approach ensures our complete peace of mind." By permanently killing bacteria, viruses and moulds, medium pressure UV ensures the water is free from Cryptosporidium and other potentially harmful microorganisms.
It is a completely clean technology which has no effect on the taste, colour or odour of food.
95% of the UV-treated water is used for washing and rinsing equipment used in the manufacturing process, while 5% is used in product make-up.
"The UV system is very easy to use," added the Project Engineer.
"It is doing its job very well and the UV lamp was still operating at 100% output six months after installation." When asked why Heinz chose Hanovia, he explained that, following an evaluation of available UV suppliers, the Hanovia system proved ideal for the application.
Based in Berkshire and part of Halma plc, Hanovia was established in 1924 and is one of the world's leading providers of medium pressure UV technology for water, effluent, air and surface disinfection.
It is the only UV system supplier with its own research and development and lamp manufacturing facility, and is therefore uniquely positioned to provide custom-made solutions for most disinfection problems.
Hanovia has more than 40,000 UV systems installed in over 100 countries.
