Harting Integrated Solutions has expanded its backplane facility in Northampton to provide a complete design and manufacturing service in one of the most advanced operations of its type in Europe The company has invested in the latest design, production and test equipment to provide a total value chain from initial concept to fully finished and tested product

In addition to carrying out backplane systems work for a variety of customers in the UK and overseas, Harting Integrated Solutions is now the main 'centre of excellence' for providing backplane services to other Harting companies throughout the world.

Recent investment in the production area at Northampton includes a Robat robotic backplane tester and a second Harting CPM2001/S semi-automatic press-in machine to add to the existing semi-automatic and fully automatic units.

These new units complement state-of-the-art surface-mount, pin-in-hole intrusive reflow and wave-soldering machines and four Terotest Lynx backplane testers.

All this equipment is housed in a fully static-safe environment, providing a 'best in class' manufacturing facility.

The new in-house PCB design facility boasts a Cadence Allegro CAD system to support the design of new backplanes to customer requirements, as well as systems based on standard bus structures such as Compact PCI.

The system includes links to the manufacturing area as well as to the extensive PCB test and H-Spice modelling software at Harting's Central Laboratories in Espelkamp, Germany.

'This design capability, linked with Harting's unrivalled expertise in connector design and manufacturing and the investment in our new manufacturing and test facilities, allows us to offer a unique combination of value services to our customers', says Steve Richardson, Sales and Marketing Manager of HARTING Integrated Solutions: 'We are already seeing the benefits of recent investment as customers are attracted to the concept of a complete backplane systems service from start to finish.' Overall services provided by the operation include design and product development, research and product test, connection and backplane simulation, prototyping, volume production, test and inspection.

The operation is certified to ISO9001:2000.

The operation occupies 2000 square metres of space within HARTING's UK headquarters in Northampton, and currently employs 70 people with a full day shift plus an evening shift.

Harting Integrated Solutions is currently handling around 500 production orders per month, representing around 20,000 finished items of which almost 12,000 are integrated backplane solutions.

Around 23% of all backplanes and backplane systems manufactured are shipped abroad, to countries that currently include Belgium, France, Israel, Norway, Spain and the United States.
