Recent developments have made 5-axis machining a realistic option for smaller toolmakers and other subcontractors to increase productivity, improve quality and reduce delivery times.
Haas general manager, Bob Murray, said: "That's why we bought 86 acres when we moved here".
"We planned that, as our business grew, we'd put up new buildings to expand our capabilities." The company's history of growth and product development began in 1983, when it developed the industry's first fully programmable rotary indexer.
That product's success ultimately led to the production of a complete line of CNC machining centres and turning centres.
After almost 10 years of growth at the original Sun Valley location, the company moved to a much larger facility in nearby Chatsworth, California.
Then, following rapid penetration in to the global market, Haas moved again in 1997, to a purpose-built facility near the Pacific Ocean in Oxnard, California.
By 2001, the Oxnard facility had expanded twice, bringing total plant size to 820,000ft2.
Haas Automation's sales have more than doubled over the last two years, driving production to record levels.
With worldwide demand for the company's products reaching all-time highs, Haas now is on target to produce 10,000 machines in 2005.
Murray continued: "The new building will serve as a warehouse for component parts, as well as inventory of finished machines".
"It will free existing space for more manufacturing".
"Its completion next February will coincide with the delivery of millions of dollars worth of new equipment that was purchased at IMTS last year".
"The expansion will give us the additional machine shop capacity and mechanical assembly space we'll require to continue our growth." More than 50,000 Haas CNC machines are currently in service worldwide and with new headquarters in Europe and Asia further extending the company's reach, the latest major expansion is not likely to be Haas Automation's last.
