A new generation of production horizontal machining centres feature massive cast-iron construction, with extensive internal ribbing on the castings to increase rigidity and damp vibrations.

Haas Automation has designed a new generation of horizontal machining centres to meet the needs of today's industries, providing high value, reliability and affordability The newest addition to the Haas HMC line-up is the EC-1600, a rugged 50-taper machining centre with 1626 x 1016 x 813mm travels, 1626 x 813mm table and 6000 rev/min, geared-head spindle

The EC-1600 features massive cast-iron construction, with extensive internal ribbing on the castings to increase rigidity and damp vibrations.

The standard T-slot table holds parts weighing up to 4500kg, and the 50-taper geared-head spindle is powered by a 22.4kW (30HP) vector drive system, providing 610Nm of torque for heavy cutting.

The machine comes standard with a 30-pocket side-mount tool changer, as well as a floppy drive, remote jog handle, 1MB of program memory and a user-definable second Home button.

In base configuration, the EC-1600 comes without an enclosure, allowing complete access to the table for very large workpieces.

An optional full enclosure is available, which includes dual chip augers and a coolant system with 300 litre capacity.

To simplify the loading of large parts, the optional enclosure has two wide doors and an open roof design that allow access to the table via overhead crane.

For machining all four sides of a workpiece in a single setup, an optional 5-deg indexing table is available.

The indexer uses a face gear coupler design that provides superior accuracy and extreme rigidity for off-centre milling and drilling/tapping operations.

With a 762mm faceplate diameter and 4500kg weight capacity, the indexer easily positions very large parts to nearly any angle for machining.

A full 4th-axis faceplate is also available, for high-speed contouring and fully interpolated motion.

For high-speed machining operations, an optional 10,000 rev/min 50-taper spindle (22.4kW, geared head) is available for the EC-1600.

Other options include high-speed machining control software with full look-ahead, high-pressure through-spindle coolant, a programmable coolant nozzle, linear scales, Visual Quick Code probing (tool and work offset), and a hard disk drive with Ethernet interface.

MACH 2006 witnessed several brand new machines from Haas Automation, the largest CNC machine tool manufacturer in the world.

Haas demonstrated machines and metal cutting technology for aerospace, automotive, medical, mould and die and general machining industries.

More than 25 CNC technology products were on show demonstrating vertical and horizontal machining and turning applications.
