Vertical machining centre finish suits press tools
Portuguese press tool manufacturer reports that components produced by a vertical machining centre can be used from the machine tool, without having to apply extra finishing processes.
Based on the shop-proven Haas VF-2 platform the new 'Super Speed' machines take performance and affordability to a whole new level.
The machines are equipped with a 12,000 rev/min, 40-taper spindle that features a unique inline, direct-drive system that couples the motor directly to the spindle rather than using belts.
This results in smoother transmission of power, less heat and less noise than other drive systems, providing better surface finishes, extreme thermal stability and very quiet operation.

Vertical machining centres cut patterns
Producer of low volume reaction injection moulded parts and polyurethane castings uses five vertical machining centres to cut master pattern equipment from polyurethane tooling board.
Powered by a 30HP vector drive system, the spindle yields 87% more torque, 40% faster rapid traverse and 59% more power than a standard 10,000 rev/min drive, as well as the speed necessary for high-speed machining operations.
The Super Speed VF-2 has travels of 762 x 406 x 508mm and features a newly designed high-speed side-mount tool changer with 24+1 tools.
Lighter materials and a high-performance servo motor make this tool changer the fastest that HAAS has ever built, with tool changes taking less than 1.6s tool to tool.
To further reduce cycle times and keep non-machining time to a minimum, the new machines rapid traverse rates are now 35m/min.
A value added options package is included in the VF-SS SE model price that features an integrated swarf conveyor, expanded memory to 1MB, coordinate rotation and scaling, built in floppy disk drive, user definable macro, programmable coolant nozzle, remote jog handle and fourth axis drive.
All Haas SE models of vertical machining centres are equipped as standard with full four axes control system for multiple part positioning and synchronised cylindrical machining.
The necessary connections and interfacing are already provided, enabling the simple plug and play of Haas rotary tables.
To demonstrate how the new machines can significantly increase production, the same component was cut on two machines.
A standard VF-2 achieved a very respectable cycle time of 5s min 9s, whereas a VF-2SS cut the part in only 3 min 20s - that is 54% faster.
