Compact machining centre scope extended
Compact vertical machining centre now has an extended working envelope and will be shown at EMO by Haas along with a high speed VMC and a low-cost toolroom milling machine.
Haas Automation Europe will be showing wide selection of machines from the huge and expanding Haas range including the VF-3YT 50-taper compact vertical machining centre (VMC), a high-performance VF-5SS VMC designed for high-volume production, a low-cost TM-3P Toolroom Mill milling machine and a high productivity EC-630 horizontal machining centre (HMC) ** Compact VMC - the recently launched VF-3YT 50-taper compact vertical machining centre features an extended 1015 x 660 x 635mm work envelope - an increase of 152mm over the standard Haas VF-3 - and a 1320 x 585mm table

Vertical machining centre finish suits press tools
Portuguese press tool manufacturer reports that components produced by a vertical machining centre can be used from the machine tool, without having to apply extra finishing processes.
The larger Y-axis travel is achieved by means of a larger base casting, yet the new machine retains a 'footprint' only slightly bigger than the standard VF-3.
Like all Haas 50-taper VMCs, the VF-3YT/50 comes standard with a 30-pocket side-mount tool changer and a 22.4kW, 7500 rev/min, geared-head spindle system that delivers up to 610Nm of torque.
Standard features also include the following.

Compact CNC millers pass office doorways
Very compact CNC milling machines re small enough to fit through a 914 mm doorway, and can easily be moved with a pallet jack or equipment dolly.
* An automatic chip auger.
* Programmable coolant nozzle.
* 380mm (15in) color LCD monitor with USB port.
* Remote jog handle.
* Haas Visual Quick Code programming system.
** High speed production VMC - the Haas VF-5SS is an addition to the company's popular line of Super Speed VMCs.
The machine is a high-performance VMC designed for high-volume production, and other work where high speed and short cycle times are important.
It comes standard with an innovative 12,000 rev/min inline direct-drive spindle, ultra-fast tool changer and 30.5m/min rapid feeds.
Based on the shop-proven Haas VF-5 platform (1270 x 660 x 635mm axis travels), the VF-5SS takes performance and affordability to a whole new level, said Haas.
This machine is equipped with a 12 000 rev/min, 40-taper spindle that uses a novel in-line, direct drive system to couple the motor directly to the spindle.
This smooth-running system is very efficient, quiet and thermally stable.
The spindle's 22,4kW vector dual-drive system provides plenty of low-end torque, as well as the speed necessary for high-speed machining operations.
'On-the-fly' wye-delta switching provides a wide constant-horsepower band.
The VF-5SS also features the following.
* A high-speed, 24-pocket side-mount tool changer that swaps tools in 1,6s.
* To reduce cycle times further and keep non-machining time to a minimum, the VF-5SS uses high-pitch ballscrews and high-torque servomotors for rapid feeds of 30,5m/min.
* 1 MB of program memory.
* Rigid tapping.
* 208 litre flood-coolant system.
** Toolroom miller has CNC flexibility - the TM-3P Toolroom Mill is a low-cost milling machine with the speed and the flexibility of a full CNC.
Based on the popular Haas TM-3, the TM-3P machine has faster speeds, an automatic toolchanger and a full enclosure.
Sensible design and utility are characteristics of all Haas Toolroom Mills, said Haas.
The TM-3P's reliable 5.6kW vector drive spindle operates at up to 6,000 rev/min and uses standard 40-taper tools.
Rapid feeds and cutting feedrates are up to 10m/min - double that of the non-enclosed TM-3.
The machine's 1015 x 510 x 405mm axis travels and a 1465 x 370mm T-slot table provide plenty of room for work-holding and larger parts, and a 10-pocket tool changer is standard.
** Horizontal machining centre - Haas Automation's newest horizontal machining center - the EC-630 - represents the latest expansion of the company's rugged line of high-productivity HMCs.
The EC-630 is the largest-capacity, high-production machine Haas has yet produced.
It features the following.
* A 1015 x 840 x 890mm work envelope.
* 50-taper geared-head spindle.
* Dual pallet changer with 630mm pallets.
* 50-pocket side-mount tool changer.
* Built-in 1 deg pallet indexer (a full 4th axis is available).
The EC-630's geared head couples the motor directly to the spindle through a Haas-built, high-precision gearbox.
This smooth-running system is very efficient, and offers tremendous thermal stability.
The two-speed gearbox provides 610Nm of torque for heavy material removal, and speeds to 6,000 rev/min for finish cuts.
Each of the machine's 630mm pallets handles a 1200kg load, and the servo-driven pallet-changer swaps pallets quickly.
A separate, protected load station allows the operator to safely load and unload parts or change fixtures on one pallet, while parts are being machined on the other - keeping spindle run-time at a maximum.
The machine's enclosure accommodates parts up to 1000mm in diameter and height.
For long-cycle production with minimal downtime, the EC-630 is equipped with a large-volume coolant tank and a high-capacity belt conveyor for efficient chip removal.
Also standard are 18m/min rapid feeds, a 380mm (15in) color LCD monitor with USB port, 1MB of program memory, a flood and washdown coolant system and a programmable coolant nozzle.
In late May 2007, Haas Automation celebrated the installation of its 75,000th machine, marking another important milestone on its way to becoming the world's largest builder of CNC machines, by volume.
The company's 1650m2 booth at EMO will show more than 40 of the very latest Haas CNC machine tools - actually cutting parts - and seven display units demonstrating Haas indexers and CNC rotary tables.
HAE will also have machines operating on up to 10 partner companies' booths around the show, including metrology company Renishaw, Urma tooling of Switzerland and IBAG spindles.
