Turning centres have longer machine beds

To satisfy a growing demand to provide CNC turning centres with longer beds, two long bed versions of existing machines were introduced at EMO 2007.

Haas Automation said that many turning shops are seeing a trend toward longer parts that require secondary machining operations.

The ability to machine these parts on a single CNC lathe in one setup reduces the cost per part and eliminates secondary operations.

To satisfy such demands, Haas has introduced long bed versions of its existing SL 20 and SL 30 CNC turning centres.

* SL 20 L turning centre - the SL-20L Long Bed offers a maximum cutting length of 1015mm and a maximum cutting diameter of 260mm.

The maximum part swing is 585mm over the front apron, and 240mm over the cross slide.

The machine is equipped with an A2-6 spindle nose and 210mm hydraulic chuck, with a bar capacity of 51mm.

A programmable hydraulic tailstock provides support for long work pieces, and a 10-station bolt-on style tool turret is standard, with options for a VDI turret or hybrid VDI/bolt-on turret.

Featuring a 15kW (peak) vector dual-drive system, the SL-20L's spindle delivers 209Nm of torque for heavy cutting, and speeds to 4,000 rev/min for finish work and high surface feed rates.

'On-the-fly' Y-delta switching provides the high torque and wide constant-horsepower band necessary for constant-surface-speed cuts.

For more capacity without moving up to a larger machine, a 'Big-Bore' option is available that upgrades the SL-20L to a 22kW, 3,400 rev/min spindle, 254mm chuck and 64mm bar capacity.

An extensive list of options and accessories allows machine shops to tailor the SL-20L to their specific requirements.

Options include 5,000 rev/min or 7,000 rev/min spindles, live tooling with full C-axis, high-pressure coolant systems, a servo bar feeder and much more.

One of the most significant features of the SL-20L is the Haas control.

While other controls use multi-step commands for many operations, such as setting tool offsets, the Haas control reduces these operations to the push of one button.

A full-color LCD screen, dedicated 131-key keypad, advanced program editing and Haas Visual Quick Code programming make the Haas CNC control extremely user-friendly.

* SL 30L turning centre - based on the shop-proven SL-30 turning center, the SL-30L has a maximum cutting length of 1525mm - nearly twice the capacity of a standard SL-30 - and a maximum cutting diameter of 432mm.

An A2-6 spindle nose and 254mm chuck provide a bar capacity of 76mm.

The machine has a maximum part swing of 762mm over the front apron, and 368mm over the cross slide.

A programmable hydraulic tailstock provides support for long work pieces, and a 12-station bolt-on style tool turret is standard, with options for a VDI turret or hybrid VDI/bolt-on turret.

Heavy cuts and finish work are no problem for the SL-30L said Haas Automation to Manufacturingtalk.

The 30HP (peak) vector dual-drive system produces 407Nm of torque for heavy cutting, and speeds to 3400 rev/min for finishing and high surface feed rates.

A 'Big Bore' option, with 380mm chuck and 100mm bar capacity, is available for the SL-30L, along with many other options to customise the SL-30L to any shop's production needs.

These include a two-speed gearbox that boosts torque to 1150Nm, high-pressure coolant systems, a servo bar feeder and much more.
