Ultra-compact gears are also lightweight
Lightweight, ultra-compact gears have been developed for where operating space or weight are limited, including machine tools and specialised automation and manufacturing equipment.
Harmonic Drive, Europe's leading manufacturer of precision gears and actuators, has introduced an innovative new range of lightweight, ultra-compact gears, specifically developed for applications where operating space or weight are limited, including machine tools, in-flight aircraft systems and specialised automation and manufacturing equipment Called the CSD Series the new gear component sets incorporate proven and high efficiency Harmonic Drive technology, weigh from as little as 0.06kg, offer a particularly flat profile and a reduction in axial length of more than 60% by comparison with existing products

Modular harmonic drive gear is precise
Compact, integrated gear and pre-loaded output bearing unit provides higher bearing load capacity, with significantly improved concentricity and run-out tolerances than competing devices.
Miniature hollow-shaft servo actuators have power
A range of miniature hollow-shaft servo actuators, includes what may be the world's smallest servo actuator, delivering 1.8Nm of torque from an integrated AC motor, gearbox and encoder.
The new high efficiency CSD gears also provide extremely precise motion control and low levels of start-up and back-driving torque; transmission accuracy is less than 1.0 arc minute, repeatability is within +/-0.1 arc minute and, depending on unit size, start-up torque can be as low as 2.4Ncm, with the maximum momentary torque rating being up to 1,560Nm.
In addition, the use of Harmonic Drive technology eliminates backlash effects, while the overall construction of each gear set allows a central hollow shaft to be incorporated, so that cables and pipes can easily be routed to minimise space requirements.
In common with all Harmonic Drive component sets, the new CSD Series features specially developed and patented tooth profiles, with an enlarged tooth root radius.
This dramatically increases the region of tooth engagement by comparison with conventional involute gear mechanisms, from around 15% to 30%, providing significant improvements in stiffness and torque capacity.
In addition, the design and construction of the new CSD gears means that they are quick and easy to install, as well as being robust, fully protected against corrosion and virtually maintenance-free.
The new CSD Component Sets are manufactured in a range of seven different sizes to meet the needs of most applications and can be supplied on short delivery times.
