There are over 3,000 self-piercing rivets in the body of the new Jaguar XJ aluminium riveted and adhesive-bonded monocoque bodied luxury car, and no spotwelds! In 1998, Jaguar approached Henrob to become the riveting technology partner for the new XJ programme It was to be an aluminium bodied vehicle joined by riveting and adhesive rather than a conventional steel body joined together by spotwelding

A number of world firsts are associated with Jaguar's application of Henrob self-pierce riveting technology on the XJ, including the joining of multi-layer material combinations not previously achieved in the automotive industry, by a comprehensive range of riveting equipment, and, the introduction of lightweight riveting tools for favourable robotic handling.

Henrob developed world leading self-pierce riveting technology for highly automated automotive applications, and has since provided the technology for several aluminium BIW applications as well as numerous light-metal closures and a large share of the aluminium-intensive class 8 truck cabs produced in the US.

The Jaguar partnership came about partly due to Henrob's earlier work with Ford and Alcan on concept development aluminium vehicle programmes such as the AIV and Taurus.

Henrob's involvement was very comprehensive, ranging from prototype build support in North America to material development in Germany for improved riveting performance to production equipment trials in Spain.

There was also a substantial programme of work on experimental joining solutions which included static, fatigue and corrosion testing of joints and the selection of cost effective rivet coatings to address new European legislation on the "end of life" for vehicles.

Henrob's riveting process produces highly consistent joint properties as well as giving enhanced fatigue properties, and can be monitored none destructively by the company1s integral process monitoring system to streamline production and reduce inspection intervals.

Henrob was established in the UK in 1985 and Henrob Corporation has been supplying customers in the US since 1992.

In Germany, Henrob GmbH was established in 2001.
