Heidenhain (GB) has joined forces with Sheffield-based machine tool distributor Ward Hi-Tech to promote the use of machine probing The co-operation involves a CME FS-0 bed-type milling machine equipped with Heidenhain's iTNC530 control, TS640 spindle touch probing and TT130 tool touch probing systems

Installed at the newly opened Northern Technologies Advanced Manufacturing Centre (NTAMC) in Burnley, Lancashire, the machine will demonstrate the potential contribution of high-technology manufacturing to making UK industry more cost-competitive.

Northern Technologies and Heidenhain (GB) have enjoyed a close working relationship over the last five years, initially at Northern Technologies' engineering and technical support centre in Nelson, Lancashire and now at the Advanced Manufacturing Centre.

Commenting on the co-operation between the two businesses Dave Collins, NTAMC's technical services manager, says: "We have worked together on many projects over this period, especially on Micro Productivity Projects".

"This involves comprehensive analysis of specific unprofitable or problem products, and through new ways of working and the application of new or emerging technologies solutions are developed and presented back to the engineering/manufacturing sector".

" The partnership with Heidenhain has allowed NTAMC to demonstrate cost reduction in setup, fixturing and in process inspection utilising Heidenhain probing and tool breakage systems".

"The software driving the probing system is integral with the CNC control, so no new programming techniques are required." In this latest co-operation with Ward Hi-Tech and NTAMC, Heidenhain will demonstrate the benefits that result from the correct use of probes for part location/measurement and tool measurement".

" "This is a tremendous opportunity to promote the latest in our control and probing technology to an audience that is in tune with what these developments can provide to manufacturing companies in the UK," says Stuart Jenkins, Heidenhain (GB)'s sales office manager.
