Cosworth has ordered 15 horizontal machining centres from Heller Machine Tools to manufacture cylinder heads and cylinder blocks for the new JCB-backed Scout project engine.

Heller Machine Tools has won an order for 15 horizontal machining centres from Cosworth The machines are to be built at the company's Redditch manufacturing site, and machine build will start immediately

The machines have been ordered by Cosworth Technologies specifically for the much-heralded Scout project, created to enable JCB to build its own engines.

The latest generation MCH series machines will be used to manufacture the cylinder heads and cylinder blocks for the new engine.

The MCH 280s have the Heller gear driven HSK 100 spindle and provide a large working envelope of 1000mm (X) x 800mm (Y) x 800mm (Z).

Spindle speed is 45-60,000rpm.

Pallet size is 630mm square, a relatively unusual configuration for Heller machines.

Control is by Siemens Sinumerik 840D.

The order says Geoff Lloyd, MD of Heller, is significant not only for Heller but for UK engineering.

"This is a major machine tool order by any standards at any time" he said.

"We are very proud to have been honoured with the order and that the machines will be built in the UK to manufacture engines in the UK for a UK company.

We were selected against fierce competition because of the quality of our machines and machine build, because of the features on the machine, and most especially because, as a UK manufacturer, we can provide an exceptionally high level of service and support.

" He adds: "Heller machines have a proven track record in the automotive industry over many years, and this is the latest in a long line of prestigious projects which we have undertaken.

Last year we were delighted to receive an order for 12 MC16 machining centres from Toyota Motor Europe manufacturing for its Deeside plant, and another of the many automotive manufacturers for which we have built machines".

Heller is recognised world-wide for its expertise in designing and manufacturing standard and special machines ideally suited to the automotive industry.

It has grown and developed with the industry as technology and production requirements have changed.
