General engineering subcontractor Precimax has ordered two MC16.1 horizontal machining centres together with a fully integrated Fastems FMS system Heller Machine Tools.

Precimax, based in Corsham, Wiltshire, has ordered two MC16.1 horizontal machining centres together with a fully integrated Fastems FMS system from Redditch-based Heller Machine Tools Precimax, well established as general engineering subcontractors, has made the significant investment to service the contract it has won recently to manufacture components for Westinghouse railway brakes

The Heller machines with the 48 pallet Fastems FMS system will replace the present production facilities, giving Precimax the ability to manufacture the components more efficiently and economically as well as to control batch quantities in line with customer requirement.

Heller have been appointed to manage the turnkey project, overseeing and controlling the integration of the Fastems FMS system as well as building, installing and commissioning its own machines.

Although only two machines have been ordered, the FMS system is being prepared in such a way that a third machine could be integrated at a later date if production levels make the additional capacity necessary.

Heller will also be supplying application engineering support to ensure a swift change over of production from the existing facility to the Heller machines, including assistance with both the existing fixtures and tooling.

The MC16.1 machines are ideally suited to applications such as this because they offer fast, accurate production due to the rapid traverse rates (60m/min), minimal chip-to-chip times (2.8sec) and quick pallet change times (9sec).

Working envelope of the machines are 630mm x 630mm x 630mm.

The chain-type tool magazines have 40 pockets.

Control is by Siemens Sinumerik 840D.

The Fastems FMS systems allows a wide range of different but similar components to be handled quickly and efficiently: the fixtures are controlled by software integrated by Heller into the machine control so that the relevant pallets can be summoned to the machine automatically.
