Batch production of aluminium components using 5-axis machining is now available from Hemlock Engineering, following the purchase of a second Mikron machining centre in just four months.

Batch production of aluminium components using 5-axis machining technology is now available from Hemlock Engineering of Stapleford, Nottingham, UK, following the purchase of a second Mikron XSM 600U universal five-axis machining centre in just four months.

The over GBP 600,000 investment in the installation of the two high precision machining centres with the ability to produce components on 5.1/2 sides in a single cycle using high speed, up to 36,000 rev/min, spindle technology, provides a rare capability on the subcontract market.

This is especially so with the support of a resident 3D modelling specialist using Openmind Hypermill software with the advantage of working through one data model from design to manufacture.

Both Mikron machines have a seven pallet system with a machining envelope of 600mm by 600mm by 600mm, which is ideal for producing components out of solid aluminium billets or plates avoiding the need for the customer to supply castings or mouldings.

In addition, through the high levels of precision available, excellent geometric relationships of different features of a component can be maintained with high orders of surface finish.

Lead times are also shortened because the need for multi-machine set ups is avoided.

Hemlock Engineering has extensive subcontract machining experience in the printer, domestic appliance, medical, telecommunications, automotive, motorsport and aerospace sectors.
