Tools machine deep ribs, slots in 70HRC steel
Fine grain solid carbide miniature tools are specially suited to machining deep ribs and slots in moulds up to 70HRC - and for deep contours - up to 35xdiameter.
Constantly increasing pressure on time and costs in the field of tools and dies and mould-making make reduced cycle times and more efficient machining processes essential.
In order to meet these requirements, Hitachi Tool has developed two series of the new Epoch Deep Pencil Neck micro-fine grain solid carbide miniature tools, the ball-nose and the toric versions.
These tools are specially suited to machining deep ribs and slots in moulds and for deep contours, up to 35xdiameter (D), in precision components.
Up to now, highly time-consuming EDM processes have been required for these operations.
The Epoch Deep Pencil Neck series provides the user with the rigidity and extended tool lifetimes required to make complex milling operations of this kind economical and dependable.
This applies equally to applications involving high-speed machining (HSM) and hard materials up to 70HRC.
These assets are, to a large extent, the product of Hitachi Tool's intensive development work in the field of cutter geometry and coatings technology.
The totally new design of the under-neck section on the Epoch Deep Pencil Neck series coupled with the optimised length ratio have improved resistance to breakage by 200%, which considerably reduces the risk of tool breakage.
This is achieved by means of the effective under-neck length at 0.4 deg and 0.9 deg, and the combined neck geometry with smooth transition from neck to shaft.
In addition to this, the back-draft geometry of the cutting edges with correspondingly reduced contact areas enhances quiet running characteristics, surface quality and dimensional accuracy with long overhangs, because the tendency to chatter and vibrate is reduced.
In addition, these end mills are already provided with the Hitachi NANO PVD TH45+coating.
This new coating, which has already been successfully used in practice, enables much extended tool service life when machining hardened materials, in particular during dry-cutting.
A further special feature of the Epoch Deep Pencil Neck end mills is the increased effective length of the mill, which comes into its own when dealing with an existing draft angle.
Example: when a mould with a draft angle of 1 deg is machined with an R 0.5 end-mill and an under-neck length of 10mm, the EPDBP Epoch Deep Ball Pencil Neck with its neck angle of 0.9 deg provides a working reach of 11.2mm, and the EPDRP Epoch Deep Radius Pencil Neck with its 0.9 deg neck angle provides a working reach of 11.24mm.
The effective reach of a conventional tool would be 10.8mm.
