UK manufacturers out of date with data
storage
Manufacturing least likely to plan data storage requirements with only 14% perceiving storage as a vital part of the IT infrastructure
Recent research carried out by Hitachi Data Systems reveals that only 13% of the manufacturing industry considers environmental factors as a key consideration in deciding on IT investments, in spite of the growing awareness of climate change In addition, the manufacturing sector is the least likely to plan their data storage needs ahead with only 14% perceiving storage to be a vital part of the IT infrastructure

The results show that the sector is behind the times in its attitude to data storage and could be creating problems for itself in the future with under-investment and a lack of strategic planning.
Other key findings from the survey show:.
- Almost half of manufacturing companies do not have a policy for the security of company data stored on mobile devices, risking valuable information leaving the organisation on mobiles, laptops and PDAs.
- Manufacturing is the least likely of all sectors to have a data deletion policy to aid efficient data management (41%).
- It is the most likely to use legacy disk or tape backup rather than newer technologies (49%).
- Only 1% of the sector has more than three quarters of its data archived.
