Having acquired a 15 inch chuck CNC mill-turn lathe, Holifields can now machine larger components of considerable complexity.

Abingdon-based contract machinist, Holifields, has taken delivery of a 15 inch chuck lathe - a Daewoo Puma 400MB - extending its turning capacity to 560mm diameter and nearly a metre in length.

Until now its largest turning machine was another Puma capable of turning components up to 360mm diameter by 430mm long.

Delivered by UK agent, Mills Manufacturing Technology, during January 2003, the latest turning machine will allow additional work to be taken on.

Offshore components such as flanges are an obvious target, as well as other large, ring-type parts frequently CNC profiled on Holifields' water jet cutting machines.

In addition to machining larger components, the 400MB will also tackle parts of considerable complexity by deploying live tools in its 12-station turret in conjunction with the spindle's C-axis.

The tools are driven by a 7.5 kW motor at up to 3,000 rpm.

Power of the main AC spindle motor is 30 kW, delivering speeds up to 2,000 rpm.

Control system is the very capable Fanuc 18i-T.

In addition to the water jet cutting equipment and the two Pumas, Holifields' plant list includes 11 other CNC turning centers including vertical turning capability, and nine machining centers.

The company is renowned for its willingness to manufacture and stock parts on consignment, so customers pay for them only when they are delivered.

Quality control is to the latest standard - ISO9001:2000.
